PORTLAND THORNS Founded in 2012, Portland Thorns FC have set the standard for fan support and on-field success in women’s soccer since its inaugural 2013 season. One of the world’s most supported women’s soccer clubs, Portland has led the league in attendance for eight seasons and set a new club playoff attendance record last year with 25,218 fans supporting Thorns FC in the 2023 semifinal match at Providence Park. Thorns FC have won the NWSL Championship a league-record three times (2013, 2017, 2022) and finished as runners-up in 2018. THE ROLE: As the Social Media Manager, you will be the voice of our social media channels, engaging with a global fanbase and strengthening connections with both loyal and new fans. Your role will involve bringing stories to life by identifying, creating, and sharing compelling content across various platforms, with a focus on growing and enhancing the Portland Thorns fan base. This position is crucial in executing the club's social media strategy, managing daily content creation, and supporting brand storytelling through video and other digital formats. WHAT YOU’LL BE UP TO: • Report to Director of Social Media • Assists in scheduling daily content across all Thornsfc platforms (which include: Instagram, Facebook, X, Threads, BlueSky, LinkedIn) and other emerging channels. • Provide real-time content capture at home matches, training sessions, and events when needed (weekends, holidays, late nights) • Create, film and edit compelling vertical iPhone content from training, matches and events and work with the players to create unique, engaging content • Align all content towards overall social strategy and team KPIs • Cross function with other departments to fit organization needs • Stays up to date with social media trends and emerging best practices/social media tools • Collaborates with the Director of Social Media to maintain consistency in voice, tone and brand look/feel • Ideate social media ideas and concepts to social media team • Collaborate with internal teams, players, and external agencies to develop creative, culturally relevant content. • Foster meaningful, authentic fan connections through community management and direct engagement. • Help identify emerging trends, opportunities, and cultural moments for engagement. • Collaborate with influencers, athletes, media and local community leaders to expand reach and engagement. • Maintain a consistent tone, style, and voice that aligns with the Portland Thorns brand. • Travel to away matches when necessary/needed WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A THORN: • 3-5 years of experience in social media management or digital content creation, preferably in the sports, entertainment, or lifestyle brands. • Experience capturing and producing live content within sports or entertainment. • Exceptional storytelling skills with proven ability to create engaging content in visual and written mediums. • Comprehensive understanding of social media platforms and their respective best practices. • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously. • Comfortable delivering, receiving and implementing creative feedback. • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Experience in social media tools and analytics platforms. • Passion for the NWSL, Soccer culture, and women’s sports.
