Full Description

You have shipped real software. We have real software to ship. You are past the stage where every requirement needs to arrive perfectly defined. You can take a feature from a half-formed conversation to something in production that does not page anyone at 2 a.m. You have opinions about ORMs, and you can explain why. Good. Let’s talk. Pioneering Evolution has spent over 15 years automating acquisition and financial management for federal programs — the budgeting, tasking, and execution machinery that moves billions of dollars through the Navy. Our applications have won awards, and more importantly, they have won over the people who have to use them every day. We call our people Pioneers. We challenge the status quo, embrace unconventional approaches, and blaze a trail for others to follow. Then we document it, because someone has to maintain it. The systems: At Pioneering Evolution, we are building a Mission Operating System (Mission OS) called SyncCore™, designed to connect data, systems, workflows, and decisions across complex mission environments. SyncCore provides the secure, event-driven digital backbone for identity, integration, canonical data, governance, auditability, and interoperability—creating a trusted foundation on which mission capabilities can rapidly evolve. It is the foundation everything else stands on. Built on SyncCore, SyncPoint™ is a modular application ecosystem composed of independently deployable modules that address specific operational needs, including requirements management, budgeting, task planning, resource allocation, execution, and decision support. Real programs. Real money. Real decisions. This is genuine distributed-systems work with a federated architecture, event-driven integration, and real multi-tenancy — not a CRUD app wearing a microservices costume. This is not a role where you will spend your first year fixing tickets in somebody else’s ten-year-old application. As a Mid-Level Software Engineer, you will own meaningful pieces of the platform or a SyncPoint module from design through production. You might build an API one sprint, design an event-driven workflow the next, work through a difficult data-modeling problem with an architect, or take a feature from an Angular interface all the way through the application and data layers. You will work alongside senior engineers and architects, but we expect you to bring ideas to the table, challenge assumptions, make engineering decisions, and increasingly own the technical outcome—not simply implement someone else’s design. You would join either the SyncCore platform team or one of our SyncPoint module teams. On the platform side, you may work on capabilities such as identity, integration, eventing, shared services, data architecture, auditability, and platform APIs. On a module team, you will translate complex real-world mission and business problems into software people actually depend on to do their jobs. The stack: C#, .NET 8+, ASP.NET Core, a CQRS-lite command pipeline, PostgreSQL with Entity Framework Core, RabbitMQ for asynchronous and event-driven flows, Angular 19 and TypeScript, Docker, CI/CD, Azure Government, xUnit, and micro-frontends. What we actually require: * Typically 3+ years of professional software development experience. * Strong professional experience with C# and modern .NET / ASP.NET Core. * The ability to independently build REST APIs, backend services, and real business logic — not just wire up someone else’s design. * Entity Framework Core or a comparable ORM, and the judgment to know when to drop to SQL instead. * Strong relational database fundamentals. You can read a query plan without flinching. * Experience writing automated unit and integration tests, as a habit rather than a chore. * Working experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and modern web applications. * The ability to deliver a complete, production-ready feature end to end. Worth saying plainly: backend .NET depth matters more to us than an exact full-stack match. If you are strong on the server and competent-but-not-expert on the front end, you are still a strong candidate. We would rather have real backend depth than a résumé that lists ten frameworks at equal shallowness. Strongly preferred, not required: PostgreSQL, Angular, RabbitMQ, Docker, Azure, distributed systems, microservices, event-driven patterns. A note for the Java engineers reading this: If you already write strongly typed, object-oriented software professionally and everything else above describes you, apply. C# is learnable. Engineering judgment is much harder to teach. We are more interested in how you design and build software than which package manager you used at your last job. Who thrives here: We move fast, and we are trying to create something special rather than something that merely satisfies a requirements document. That takes a dynamic team, and ours is small enough that everyone’s work is visible and stacked with people who are genuinely talented at this. The engineers who do best here want that. They want to build next to people who are better than them at something, to have their design questioned by someone who has earned the right to question it, and to be part of a team where the standard is set by the work rather than by a process. If you have spent time somewhere that your best work disappeared into a backlog, this will feel different. Clearance, citizenship, and location: * U.S. citizenship is required. No exceptions. Federal program requirement, not negotiable. * An active clearance is not required to apply. Active Secret is welcome. Otherwise you need to be eligible for an interim Secret, and PE sponsors — we handle the paperwork and walk you through the process. * Hybrid, a few days a week at our Arlington HQ, 2550 S. Clark Street. What we offer: $112,000 – $132,000 based on demonstrated depth, scope of prior responsibility, and interview performance. Plus paid time off, 10 paid holidays, medical, dental, and vision, company-paid life and AD&D, company-paid short- and long-term disability, 401(k) with company contribution, legal assistance, tuition reimbursement, and continuing education opportunities. You will work directly with our Lead Architect, Chief Engineer, and Tech Lead — a short chain between a good idea and it being in the codebase. Small team, real ownership, architecture decisions you can actually influence. If you have been waiting to be senior enough for your opinion to count, that wait ends here. Innovate. Accelerate. Evolve. Pioneering Evolution is an equal opportunity employer.
