Job Description: Optomi, in partnership with a top consulting company, is seeking a Staff Engineer React/Node to lead architectural design and hands-on development for California’s behavioral health transformation platforms. This role blends 40% hands-on coding with 60% architecture and technical leadership, making it ideal for engineers who thrive in both building systems and guiding teams. The Staff Engineer will be instrumental in driving scalable, cloud-native solutions on AWS, ensuring that services are reliable, performant, and impactful for millions of Californians. What the Right Candidate Will Enjoy! • Leading the architecture and delivery of critical healthcare infrastructure projects • Partnering with small, agile scrum teams to ship high-value features • Balancing technical leadership with hands-on coding opportunities • Strong career growth in both consulting and enterprise engineering leadership Experience of the Right Candidate: • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with distributed systems • 3+ years of technical leadership or staff/architect-level experience • Proven track record of delivering complex projects from design through production • Expertise in React (front end) and Node.js (backend) with TypeScript/JavaScript • Cloud-native development experience (AWS preferred; Azure acceptable) • Strong knowledge of CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, and testing strategies • Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, API design, and integration patterns • Familiarity with security best practices: OAuth/OIDC, encryption, zero-trust principles • Excellent communication and mentorship skills, with the ability to guide mid-level and senior engineers Responsibilities of the Right Candidate: • Team Ownership & Delivery: Own technical success for your product area—ensuring architecture quality, delivery outcomes, and sustainable practices • Hands-On Engineering: Write production code for complex features and critical system components (~40% of time) • Architecture & Leadership: Lead architectural design decisions, set engineering standards, and drive technical direction for the team • Mentorship: Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing, and architecture discussions, helping grow senior engineers toward staff-level impact • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams to align execution with product vision • System Design & Quality: Design robust APIs, drive reliability and performance initiatives, and champion engineering excellence through testing and operational practices
