A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with at least four years in community-centered activities, strong communication, organizational skills, and proficiency in MS Office.
Position Summary: The Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) is dedicated to providing the students of New York City with safe, clean, dependable, efficient, cost-effective, and prompt transportation. OPT is responsible for supporting the educational process through the provision of services which are essential for the education of the children but occur outside of the classroom. Under the oversight of the OPT, the Transportation Coordinator assists in ensuring that children are transported in accordance with their IEP and A1p transportation authorizations. The Transportation Coordinator provides important community services and liaison functions between OPT, school transportation providers, schools, and the parents and families of students. The Coordinator disseminates critical information regarding New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) provided General Education (GE), Special Education (SE), and Pre-K/Early Intervention (E.I.) services. The Transportation Coordinator facilitates necessary communication between schools, the Committees on Special Education, both CSE and CPSE, and OPT. The Coordinator is responsible for advising school-based personnel on NYCPS transportation procedures and policies and provides targeted support for specific schools, including field inspections/observations, as needed. The Coordinator will be the primary resource for schools on transportation procedures and policies. Performs related work. Reports to: Executive Director Direct Reports: N/A Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with OPT administration, school bus transportation providers, school-based administration, and representatives from the Office of School Health, Special Education Office, Committees on Preschool Special Education, and the Office of Students in Temporary Housing, as well as community-based organizations (CBOs) and parents. Responsibilities Support to the Office of Pupil Transportation • Manages communication between the district Committees on Special Education, both School Age and Pre-school, schools, and the Office of Pupil Transportation regarding students approved for transportation services. • Ensures that schools CPSEs and CSEs enter data in a timely and accurate manner. Fosters collaboration and process integration across the Office of Pupil Transportation and with special education personnel. • Ensures that schools submit appropriate documentation on a timely basis for the transportation needs of Special Education, General Education, and Pre-K/E.I students. • Conducts route inspections and observations. • Reviews and handles suspension exceptions. • Responds to inquiries and concerns from parents, schools, and school bus transportation providers. Community Support/School Support • Provides information and guidance to parents/guardians of students in relation to transportation accommodations associated with student placement. • Coordinates contact with various offices within the NYCPS and school bus transportation providers, as well as with outside agencies and CBOs in relation to transportation accommodation requests. • Performs difficult and responsible support operations in the area of transportation services for general education and special education students. • Collaborates with OPT Account Managers, school bus transportation providers, schools, and other interested parties in responding to inquiries from schools regarding yellow bus and MetroCard services. Support to the Committees on Special Education School Age & Pre-School • Provides guidance to school personnel and parents on Specialized Transportation policies and procedures and provides targeted intervention in schools to ensure that specialized transportation and accommodations guidelines and procedures for the medical review of transportation needs are followed. • Provides assistance and support to schools with the use of the Pre-K/ E.I. Rider System. • Reviews all documentation to support requests for specialized transportation, identifies missing requirements, and communicates with individuals responsible for obtaining this material. Support to the Office of School Health • Manages communication between the regional Committees on Special Education, schools, the Office of School Health, and CBOs, as needed. • Ensures that medical documentation is completed in a timely manner before it is sent to the Office of School Health, as needed. Qualification Requirements Minimum • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or • High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above. Plus In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above Preferred • Knowledge of NYCP’s general rules, regulations, and organizational structure. • Thorough familiarity with OPT’s transportation policies, procedures, and operational systems. • Excellent computer skills, knowledge and demonstrable experience with all basic MS Office 365 applications. • Success in an indirect management role within large organizations. • Knowledge and understanding of overall organizational strategy. • Ability to prepare written reports and presentations clearly and concisely. • Ability to make critical analyses in determining courses of action. • Experience as a persuasive and persistent advocate for customer needs. Salary: $72,114 - $79,325 (Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
