Role Description This editor is a member of the NPR Newsroom’s overnight team and reports to the Newshub Supervising Overnight Editor. The editor is responsible for editing news stories with NPR reporters for the UpFirst Podcast and Morning Edition Broadcast. • Work with the Supervising Overnight Editor to decide what stories to cover on digital platforms overnight. • Commission, edit, and sometimes write stories. • Collaborate with various newsgathering teams to spark signature NPR journalism. • Substitute for the Supervising Overnight Editor as needed. • Demonstrate impeccable news judgment and multitasking abilities. • Act in the moment by starting live blogs when news warrants and positioning reporters for assigned stories. • Monitor various signals (Chartbeat, Twitter, SnapMaps, etc.) to ensure competitive coverage. • Utilize editorial ingenuity to find angles and sources for stories. • Think holistically about content creation and curation for homepage and social platforms. • Make sound editorial decisions informed by data and analytics. This is a full-time position beginning as early as December of 2025, with work hours from Monday through Friday, 12am-8am ET. This is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. Responsibilities • Develop and execute stories for all NPR digital platforms, editing with speed, voice, nuance, and curiosity. • Be versed in content curation, using social signals to inform decision-making. • Collaborate with colleagues on broadcast to ensure proper vetting and presentation of reporting across platforms. • Field, solicit, edit, and organize contributions from NPR staff, including show hosts, correspondents, reporters, producers, and editors. • Ensure all materials meet NPR News standards and practices. • Handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under tight deadlines. • Work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. • Consistently demonstrate respect for diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system. • Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications • 3+ years professional experience editing national or international news writing on deadline. • Demonstrated excellence in digital editing, reporting, and writing. • Demonstrated news judgment and understanding of journalistic ethics. • Must possess broadcast experience. • Experience in editing digital news, including copy editing and other types of digital platform production skills. • Demonstrated ability to work at different levels of a newsroom. • Demonstrated familiarity with NPR journalism. • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. • Proven ability to consistently work well with others. • Proficiency in news writing techniques and styles, such as AP Style. • Possess a broad range and interest in national and international news. Preferred Qualifications • Experience covering a variety of beats. • Experience working with a news network. Education Requirements • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience. Work Location & Requirements • Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role based out of our Washington, DC office. • Employee may choose to work remotely from an approved location within the United States. • May be expected to travel to other locations from time to time to perform duties. Job Type • This is a full-time, exempt position. Compensation • Salary Range: The anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $105,000 - $112,499 plus benefits. • Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. • Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR’s benefits options.
