About the Department The Facilities Maintenance Technician is a part-time position responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair tasks to ensure the safety, functionality, and appearance of District buildings and grounds. This position plays a vital support role in maintaining operational readiness across all District facilities. Position Duties Supervisor: Fire Chief or designee Duties: The following are intended to indicate the basic nature of duties allocated to this class. This position may not perform all these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here. • Perform general building maintenance, including but not limited to, painting, minor carpentry, and basic plumbing. • Clean gutters air vents, and other facility infrastructure. • Operate and maintain hand tools and basic power tools. • Assist in estimating material and labor costs for maintenance projects. • Maintain accurate records of completed work, materials used, and equipment maintenance. • Prepare work areas and clean up after tasks; ensure tools and materials are secure. • Adhere strictly to safety standards, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). • Identify and report facility repair needs beyond the scope of routine maintenance. • May assist in small renovations or improvement projects under supervision. • Ensure facilities are clean, operational, and safe for department personnel and visitors. • Ensure that work follows applicable County building codes, safety rules and regulations, including Cal-OSHA and Novato Fire District policies. • Other duties as assigned based on facilities and project needs Minimum Qualifications Skills and Abilities: • Painting (exterior and interior surfaces) • Cleaning and maintenance of gutters, vents, and fixtures • Landscape sprinkler systems upkeep and repair • Use of basic hand and power tools • Basic plumbing and carpentry • Grounds keeping and general landscaping support • Strong attention to safety protocols and preventative maintenance practices • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively Minimum Qualifications: • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver’s License • High school diploma or GED certificate • One year of experience in building maintenance, as a handyperson, carpenter, or plumber • Experience in using ladders, hand and power tools, and maintenance equipment safely • Computer skills, and knowledge of basic operating and tracking software • Good verbal and written communication • Ability to get along with others in a team environment Work environment: • Work is performed at active District facilities, including administrative offices, fire stations and outdoor grounds. • May involve exposure to weather, dust, noise, and occasional hazardous materials (with PPE involved) • May require flexible scheduling depending on District need or emergency repairs Physical requirements: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and outdoor setting; to walk or work in areas with uneven footing; to walk, sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist, climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift up to 50 pounds without assistance; operate general office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Other Qualifications Additional Information: • This is a part-time position with consistent weekly schedule of approximately 30 hours. Hours may vary based on maintenance needs and project timelines. • This position is subject to background investigation, including polygraph, live scan, psychological screening and physical.
