Public Safety Communications – Call Taker Location: Washington, DC Employment Type: Contract Position Overview A public safety communications center in Washington, DC is seeking qualified Call Takers to serve as the first point of contact for emergency and non-emergency calls. This role operates within a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) / Emergency Communications Center (ECC) and plays a critical role in ensuring accurate call processing, responder dispatch coordination, and life-saving instruction delivery. Key Responsibilities • Operate automated call-handling systems to answer, screen, and process emergency and non-emergency service calls • Accurately enter call details into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and monitor response activity for police, fire, and EMS units • Provide appropriate information to the public and law enforcement agencies in accordance with established guidelines • Deliver life-saving instructions to callers until emergency assistance arrives • Transfer or direct callers to appropriate personnel, departments, or external law enforcement agencies • Document incidents thoroughly, ensuring all relevant information is captured • Relay messages clearly, completely, and accurately • Update and modify event types as additional information is obtained Minimum Education & Experience • High school diploma or equivalent • Minimum 1 year of experience working in a PSAP or ECC environment Required Skills & Abilities • Strong verbal and written communication skills • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment • Typing and computer proficiency of at least 25 words per minute • Ability to remain calm, focused, and composed in high-stress situations • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and established procedures • Fluency in English (written and spoken) • Experience in two or more of the following disciplines preferred: • Call Taking • Fire/Rescue Radio Operations • Law Enforcement Radio Operations • Willingness to work assigned schedules based on jurisdictional needs • Contract employees must comply with all applicable policies and procedures, including human resources and disciplinary standards
