Public Safety Call Taker – Emergency Communications Location: Washington, DC Employment Type: Contract Role Overview An emergency communications operation in Washington, DC is hiring Public Safety Call Takers to support daily call-handling operations. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm while assisting callers during emergency situations. Key Duties • Receive and screen incoming emergency and non-emergency calls • Accurately record incident details in a CAD system • Coordinate with police, fire, and EMS units by monitoring response status • Provide emergency medical or safety instructions until help arrives • Transfer callers to appropriate internal or external agencies • Document and update incident records in real time • Communicate critical information clearly and efficiently Education & Experience • High school diploma or GED required • Minimum 1 year of experience in an ECC or PSAP environment Required Skills • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities • Ability to multitask and prioritize during high call volume • Typing proficiency of at least 25 words per minute • Ability to stay focused and calm in stressful environments • Ability to follow procedures and protocols accurately • English fluency required • Prior experience in at least two of the following preferred: Call Taking, Fire/Rescue Radio Operations, Law Enforcement Radio Operations • Willingness to work assigned schedules • Subject to all applicable jurisdictional employment policies
