At Nautilus, we have a big and important mission: improve the health of millions by unleashing the potential of the proteome to accelerate drug development and enable a new world of precision and personalized medicine. We are developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform of unprecedented sensitivity, scale, and ease of use that we believe will democratize access to the proteome – one of the most dynamic and valuable sources of biological insight. To accomplish this, we are pursuing hard scientific problems with an entrepreneurial mindset and creating a world-class team of builders, innovators, and dreamers across a wide range of disciplines. We are hiring a Senior Manager, Software Engineering, to lead and actively contribute to the development of Nautilus’s web applications and services. This role will own the customer‑facing web application, support and evolve our internal web application used by R&D scientists to analyze experiment results. You will also help define and build future web applications and web services as our platform grows. This is a hands‑on leadership role. You will manage and mentor engineers while remaining deeply involved in architecture, design, implementation, code reviews, and technical decision‑making. You will work closely with Product, Scientific, Bioinformatics, and Platform teams to ensure our web experiences are scalable, reliable, secure, and intuitive for both external customers and internal users. This position will report to the Associate Director of Software Engineering, and will be located in Seattle, WA. Responsibilities Own the development, delivery, and operational excellence of Nautilus’s web applications, both customer- facing and internal. Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of high technical standards, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Remain hands on with development, contributing production code across the stack (frontend, backend, APIs) as needed. Partner closely with Product Management and scientific stakeholders to translate product and research needs into well designed, scalable software solutions. Design and evolve modern web architectures using React/TypeScript frontends and Python/FastAPI backends. Oversee development of secure, well documented APIs and web services that integrate with Nautilus data platforms and cloud infrastructure. Ensure best practices in software engineering, including code quality, testing, observability, performance, reliability, and security. Collaborate with other software and IT teams on cloud architecture, deployment strategies, and operational readiness in AWS. Evaluate new technologies and patterns, making pragmatic recommendations that balance innovation, maintainability, and delivery. Contribute to roadmap planning, estimation, and execution while ensuring predictable delivery of high-quality software. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 10+ years of experience building and delivering complex software systems, with significant experience in modern web application development. Prior experience leading or managing software engineers, including mentoring, performance feedback, and career development. Strong hands-on experience with: Frontend: React, TypeScript, modern web frameworks and tooling Backend: Python, RESTful API design Datastores: PostgreSQL; familiarity with analytical systems such as Athena Cloud: AWS based architectures and services Deep understanding of authentication, authorization, and secure web application design. Proven ability to deliver customer-facing software with high reliability and usability. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional technical and non-technical stakeholders. A track record of making teams better through both technical and people leadership.
