Position Summary: The Vice President of Communications & Brand will play an essential role in advancing NAF’s mission by building and leading the communications and brand strategy in support of abortion providers and the people they serve across the U.S. at a critical moment for reproductive freedom. This role oversees all external and internal communications, brand strategy, media relations, and digital engagement, ensuring clarity, consistency, and impact across all platforms. This role ensures the organization’s messaging and brand are engaging, persuasive, disciplined, data-informed, aligned across channels, and centered on abortion providers and the patients they serve. Serving on NAF’s senior leadership team and reporting directly to the President & CEO, this position will lead a newly established Communications and Brand organizational unit in addition to developing a high-impact team, creating and driving strategies to strengthen the national profile of NAF, its members, and patients; elevating NAF’s brand, and proactively shape the public understanding of abortion care and access. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Strategic Communications & Brand Leadership • Develops and executes a comprehensive communications and brand strategy aligned with organizational goals, priorities, and programmatic work. • Builds a strong public brand that is aligned with the mission, vision, and values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. • Serves as the primary point of internal contact for communications and brand, and the steward of the organization’s brand, ensuring consistency, inclusivity, and resonance across all channels and touchpoints. • Translates complex, sensitive, and often stigmatized issues into clear, compelling, and values-driven messaging for diverse audiences. Narrative & Public Voice • Shapes proactive and responsive narratives around abortion care, access, and reproductive freedom, including during moments of heightened public attention or crisis. • Partners closely with executive leadership to position the organization as a thought leader and trusted voice in the abortion care ecosystem. • Develops messaging frameworks, talking points, and story strategies that center patients, providers, and communities with dignity and care. Media & External Relations • Leads national and local media strategy, including press outreach, spokesperson preparation, rapid response, and crisis communications. • Cultivates strong relationships with journalists, editors, influencers, and partner organizations. • Serves as a key advisor to the CEO and leadership team on public-facing communications and reputational risk. • Serves as an organizational spokesperson on key issues. • Represents NAF in external communications coalitions with partner organizations. Digital & Audience Engagement • Oversees digital communications, including websites, social media, email, and multimedia storytelling. • Collaborates with teams across the organization to support fundraising, membership engagement, and legal and policy issues. • Uses data and insights to refine messaging, grow audiences, and deepen engagement. Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration • Hires, leads, mentors, and grows a high-performing communications and brand team. • Fosters a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven team culture. • Works cross-functionally with teams (in particular with Legal, Policy, & Advocacy; Development, the National Abortion Hotline, and Membership Engagement) to ensure alignment and cohesion. • Manages communications consultants. • Assumes responsibility within the role to foster a culture of equity, inclusion, belonging, and accountability. Internal Communications • Ensures staff are informed, aligned, and equipped to serve as ambassadors of the organization’s mission, vision, and values. • Supports internal change communication during periods of growth, transition, or external pressure. • Collaborates with Human Resources to support internal communications efforts, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities. • Performs other duties as assigned in support of NAF’s mission and vision. Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required: • Bachelor’s degree in related fields (i.e., Communications, Journalism, Public Relations); master’s degree preferred. • 10+ years of progressive experience in communications, brand, media, journalism, or public affairs, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role. • Demonstrated experience leading communications in a nonprofit, advocacy, health care, or mission-driven organization. Experience with crisis communications and rapid response preferred. • Deep understanding of abortion care, reproductive health, and/or social justice issues—or a strong commitment to learning and alignment with the mission and vision. Lived experience or strong cultural competence working with communities most impacted by abortion access barriers preferred. • Proven ability to lead high-stakes, values-based communications in complex or politically sensitive environments. • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills. • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills; and • Experience managing teams, budgets, and external vendors or agencies. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). • Familiarity with CRMS, Mailchimp, Cision, NewsDip aggregators, Septor and social media platforms, or similar platforms. • Strategic thinker with strong execution skills • Calm, decisive leadership under pressure. • High emotional intelligence and sound judgment • Ability to balance bold advocacy with organizational risk management. • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and strong commitment to abortion access, NAF’s mission, and organizational values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism. • Ability to work remotely from an approved NAF work state location; Preference for candidates in the following locations: District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, New York, or Connecticut. ADA Specifications: • Normal demands associated with an office and primarily remote-based work environment. • Ability to work on computer for prolonged periods, communicate with individuals by telephone, video conferencing technologies, e-mail, and face to face. • Travel may be required up to 20% to support organizational needs.
