Overview: The Commercial Credit Analyst Program (the “Program”) is a structured, full‑time development program designed to prepare early‑career professionals for long‑term roles in commercial and corporate credit. Participants receive formal classroom instruction with expert facilitation and program management support, hands‑on credit underwriting and monitoring experience, and exposure to and network building with credit associates, senior credit officers, relationship managers, and risk leadership. The program typically spans 10 months, combining rotational assignments with increasing credit and analytical complexity. Throughout the Program, participants will report to the Commercial Credit Senior Director of Business Execution & Credit Support and will receive on-the-job guidance from Credit Managers and other department personnel. Upon successful completion of the Program, participants will be placed into a Commercial Credit Analyst role determined by business need. Primary Responsibilities: Training & Development Complete a formal training program that includes instructor-led sessions, web-based learning, individual and group activities, and on-the-job assignments. Demonstrate active engagement in all training and cohort sessions by contributing to discussions, asking questions, participating in activities, and collaborating with peers. Complete all program assignments, exercises, and deliverables by established deadlines and to required quality standards. Participate in ongoing coaching and feedback sessions with senior analysts, credit associates, credit managers, and credit officers; apply feedback to improve performance. Demonstrate progressive readiness for independent underwriting responsibilities based on performance, capability development, and consistent application of program learning. Participate in leadership and functional professional development, networking, and community-focused activities as part of the cohort experience. Credit Analysis & Underwriting Review and analyze financial statements, cash flow, leverage, liquidity, and capital structures of middle‑market, commercial real estate, and large corporate borrowers Prepare comprehensive credit memoranda for new originations, renewals, amendments, and underwriting events. Assess borrower performance, industry trends, and macroeconomic risks. Evaluate collateral, guarantor support, covenant structures, and debt capacity. Portfolio Monitoring & Risk Management Monitor assigned loan portfolios for credit quality, covenant compliance, and early warning indicators. Support portfolio reviews, stress testing, and risk rating migrations. Assist with criticized/classified credit identification and action plans. Develop an understanding of various credit policies and procedures along with product knowledge. Deal Support & Exposure Partner with relationship managers, credit associates, and product specialists to support credit structuring. Participate in due diligence calls, management meetings, and underwriting discussions. Gain exposure to syndicated loans, leveraged finance, asset‑based lending, commercial real estate and other corporate credit products, as applicable. Adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies. Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand. Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable. Complete other related duties as assigned. Scope of Responsibilities: Commercial Credit is responsible for the credit delivery of the Bank's commercial clients throughout the credit lifecycle. Credit assessments range from initial analyses of new relationships to the Bank to material modifications or restructurings of long-term relationships and ongoing monitoring through the life of the loan. Commercial Credit is also responsible for ensuring the accurate completion of the Bank's risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads. The work completed in this capacity is used to make credit decisions for new or renewed or amended credit transactions. Participates in the assigned Commercial Credit Analyst Program (CAP) training curriculum. Includes a combination of in-person and virtual training and activities, as well as on-the-job application. Rotations provide the opportunity for the participant to support different teams and functions across the various Commercial Credit line of businesses, segments, and geographic locations and may include: Commercial & Industrial Banking Commercial Real Estate Specialized Industries Leveraged Finance Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities: None Education and Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or a related field with cumulative GPA of 3.0. Strong financial statement analysis and accounting fundamentals. Analytical mindset with attention to detail and sound judgment. Clear, concise written communication skills for credit documentation. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline‑driven environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Professional curiosity and desire to build a career in credit risk. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment with individual assignments. Willingness to adapt to technology changes, innovation, agility, customer centricity, change management and continuous improvement. Travel will be required for in-person sessions, approximately 1 week at a time throughout the program. Work in a hybrid environment (4 days in the office, remainder remote). Education and Experience Preferred: MBA 0–3 years of relevant experience in credit, banking, finance, accounting, audit, or financial analysis. Internship or prior exposure to commercial or corporate banking. Physical Requirements: M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees.
