POSITION OVERVIEW: Join our passionate team at the Mount St. Helens Institute (MSHI) as our Marketing & Communications Coordinator! In this dynamic role, you will help share the story of MSHI’s work and bring the mountain’s programs, events, and experiences to life for our community. Working closely with leadership and program staff, you’ll create engaging content, maintain our digital platforms, and support marketing efforts that connect participants, donors, partners, and the public to Mount St. Helens. The ideal candidate is eager to learn and grow, enjoys translating stories into compelling communications, and is excited to explore creative ways to connect people with science, education, and the outdoors. POSITION DETAILS: Title: Marketing & Communications Coordinator Position type: Quarter-time (10 hours/week), hourly, non-exempt Wages: Starting hourly rate between $23.99-$25.45; position may be eligible for an annual increase. Benefits: Benefits include Simple IRA retirement plan with 3% employer match and paid sick leave. Digital Media (35%) • Develop and moderate engaging, high-quality content for MSHI’s social media platforms and website, incorporating SEO best practices to improve search visibility and engagement. • Maintain and update MSHI’s website, ensuring accurate, current, and relevant content. • Implement and analyze social media strategies, engaging audiences on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, with potential expansion to LinkedIn and other emerging platforms. • Manage digital media assets to support content creation and organization. Communications (30%) • Coordinate stakeholder communications, ensuring clear and engaging updates through newsletters, social media, and other outreach. Craft messages to keep donors, supporters, and stakeholders informed and engaged with the organization's activities and impact. • Assist in the development and design of MSHI publications and communications, including brochures, annual reports, and press releases. • Curate and share compelling stories that highlight MSHI's programs, events, and participant experiences to engage and inform our audience. • Support organizational fundraising efforts and donor stewardship. Marketing (25%) • Promote MSHI events, programs, and initiatives through targeted marketing efforts • Collaborate on and execute the organizational marketing strategy • Ensure brand consistency across all communications, maintaining a strong, unified voice and image • Assist with Google Ads and basic search engine tracking, helping maintain ad performance and reach. • Help track engagement metrics across communications and digital media, providing data to inform content and outreach decisions. Staff and organizational relations (10%): • Attend regular virtual staff meetings (Thursdays). • Understand MSHI’s mission, vision, values, programs, and places. • Build relationships with staff members; Collaborate with staff across departments to support communications and marketing initiatives. • Support organizational events as assigned. As a small nonprofit, we all wear many hats. Other duties may be assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: This position demands a diverse and dynamic skill set. A successful candidate will possess the ability to be nimble and learn new skills, the technical, organizational, and interpersonal proficiencies to effectively connect with our constituents, and an appreciation for the unique place and meaning of Mount St. Helens. • Enthusiasm for the mission of the Mount St. Helens Institute, and for outdoor recreation and science education at Mount St. Helens. • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and environmental justice, and an understanding of the experiences and barriers affecting people marginalized in science and outdoor recreation. • At least one year of experience in marketing, communications, or a related field. • Curiosity and enthusiasm for science communication, and sharing the unique stories of Mount St. Helens. • Proficiency in digital marketing best practices, including social media management, website maintenance, and content creation. • Experience using Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, graphic design tools (i.e. Canva), and social media management tools; preferred experience with Meta Business Suite and Google Ads. • Strong writing, editing, and design skills with an eye for detail. • Skill in handling sensitive or challenging topics with professionalism, respect, and poise. • Innovative, proactive, creative, and team-oriented approach to work. • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and manage shifting priorities to meet deadlines. • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods and attend virtual meetings. • Access to reliable internet.
