We focus on advancing policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) changes that make physical activity a natural, safe, and accessible part of everyday life—especially for communities that have historically faced barriers to movement and health. Position Summary The Health Communications & Social Media Intern will support Michigan Moves in communicating clear, evidence-informed physical activity messages to the public, partners, and policymakers. This fully remote role is ideal for a student or recent graduate in public health, health promotion, health communication, kinesiology, exercise science, or a related field who wants hands-on experience using communication and digital media to support population health, health equity, and movement-focused initiatives. You will help translate public health concepts into accessible, engaging content that supports our statewide advocacy and coalition-building work. Key Responsibilities Health Communications & Content Development • Draft clear, accessible messages about physical activity, health equity, and Michigan Moves initiatives for social media, email, and the website. • Translate public health research, guidelines, and coalition priorities into plain-language posts, graphics, and short narratives. • Help craft stories that highlight community partners, local successes, and policy/system changes that support active living. Social Media & Digital Outreach • Assist in planning, drafting, and scheduling content for Michigan Moves social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, X/Twitter). • Monitor social media channels for relevant public health conversations, partner posts, and engagement opportunities. • Support promotion of campaigns, events, webinars, and advocacy actions. Basic Design & Visual Communication • Create simple graphics, infographics, and short video clips (e.g., Canva) that communicate key public health and physical activity messages. • Help ensure all materials are culturally respectful, inclusive, and accessible. Website, Email, and Coalition Support • Assist with basic updates to the Michigan Moves website (news, events, resources). • Support monthly or periodic email newsletters with partner highlights, campaign updates, and calls to action. • Help maintain simple tracking logs of communication activities and timelines. Monitoring & Basic Evaluation • Track and summarize social media engagement (reach, clicks, shares, etc.) to understand what messages resonate. • Provide brief reflections and recommendations on how to improve public health messaging based on engagement trends. Qualifications Education/Background • Current student or recent graduate in public health, health promotion, health behavior, kinesiology, exercise science, health communication, marketing, public relations, communications, or a related field. Skills & Competencies • Strong writing skills, especially the ability to write clearly for general audiences. • Basic design skills and/or willingness to learn tools like Canva or similar platforms. • Familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X/Twitter). • Interest in health promotion, physical activity, health equity, and community engagement. • Highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in a remote environment. Preferred but Not Required • Coursework or experience in health communication, social marketing, or public health advocacy. • Familiarity with concepts like social determinants of health, health equity, and PSE change. Skills & Experience Gained • Practical experience using social media and digital tools for public health communication and advocacy. • Experience translating public health and physical activity concepts into accessible, equity-informed messages. • Insight into how a statewide coalition operates to advance policy, systems, and environmental changes. • Exposure to cross-sector collaboration with professionals from public health, healthcare, community-based organizations, parks and recreation, and fitness. • Portfolio-building opportunities (e.g., sample posts, graphics, campaign materials) that demonstrate applied health communication experience. Compensation This is an unpaid internship. Depending on your academic program, it may be eligible for academic credit. Michigan Moves staff are happy to complete any required documentation for your college or university.
