DESCRIPTION Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Bridge Engineer - Bridge Technologies to support the design, delivery, and advancement of bridge and structural engineering projects. This role combines technical leadership, project delivery oversight, and innovation in bridge technologies, with a strong emphasis on internal collaboration, quality, and operational excellence. Reporting to the Structural Department Manager and working closely with Bridge Practice Leadership, engineering teams, technology groups, and IT, this position leads discipline-level design activities while advancing the adoption of BIM, software tools, automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve efficiency and consistency across bridge projects. The role also champions full life-cycle BIM and digital information management for complex bridge structures, while mentoring staff and establishing firm-wide standards and best practices. RESPONSIBILITIES Serve as a technical and structural task lead for bridge projects, coordinating design tasks, schedules, and deliverables. Lead and support complex bridge analysis and design efforts, including the use of finite element modeling and advanced bridge analysis tools. Drive and oversee strategic internal initiatives focused on advancing bridge technologies, digital delivery, and automation. Identify, prioritize, and support the development of technology initiatives involving software development, BIM workflows, automation, AI, and machine learning to improve project efficiency and resource utilization. Collaborate with Bridge Practice Leadership, Bridge Technology/Software teams, engineers, Consulting and Technology Solutions, IT, and other internal groups to ensure alignment and consistent implementation of technology strategies. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of BIM strategies across the full bridge life cycle, supporting digital information management and data-driven design and maintenance approaches. Perform technical reviews and quality checks to verify compliance with design standards, quality requirements, and applicable codes. Monitor adherence to QA/QC procedures and project deadlines in coordination with quality assurance teams. Support and oversee project-specific safety and Health and Safety Plan requirements. Develop, maintain, and promote firm-wide work standards and best practices related to bridge design, technology, and digital delivery. Provide regular status updates on technical progress and project delivery to the Structural Department Manager. Support proposal development efforts by providing technical input and documentation, as needed. Maintain awareness of emerging technical developments, tools, and industry trends related to bridge engineering and technology. May support or lead internal training or educational courses to advance technical knowledge within the organization. Mentor, coach, and guide engineers and technical staff, supporting career development and strengthening firm-wide technical capabilities. Assist in identifying and developing technical resources and talent within areas of subject matter expertise. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred). Tennessee Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Structural Engineer (SE) license required. 15+ years of progressive experience in bridge engineering, including technical leadership responsibilities. Extensive experience with Illinois bridge design and maintenance policies and procedures. Demonstrated expertise in complex bridge analysis and design using finite element software. Strong proficiency with computer-aided bridge design, analysis, and load rating tools. Advanced knowledge of BIM for bridge design and life-cycle applications. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Excel. Demonstrated involvement in industry and professional organizations. Recognized technical authority with a passion for advancing bridge engineering technology. Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent command of the English language. Valid driver’s license required. COMPENSATION The approximate compensation range for this position is $124,000 to $180,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
