Leading go-to-market strategy, product development, and organizational scaling for utility solutions in a startup environment.
Extensive experience in utility-specific sales, product management, or delivery, with deep domain knowledge of power systems, APIs, and energy markets; strong technical fluency; and proven leadership in building teams.
About Mercury: Mercury is a seed-stage software startup that enables utilities and data centers to exchange power capacity for load flexibility—speeding time to power for data centers while unlocking affordable load growth for utilities. Our software-only solution supports utility data center flexibility programs from end to end, including data center evaluation & enrollment, technical integration & testing, and ongoing dispatch & compliance monitoring. We leverage behind-the-meter storage and/or generation assets, non-interruptive GPU orchestration solutions, or even curtailable off-site capacity to help data centers meet utility program requirements. We are actively piloting Mercury with Duke Energy in the Carolinas, where we are building the first data center flexibility demonstration featuring live AI workloads. Several other pilot programs with major US utilities, as well as a full scale 100MW+ project with a “power first” data center partner, are in the design phase and slated for launch in 2026. Mercury is funded by Powerhouse Ventures, the leading utility-backed VC, as well as Crucible Capital, an investor managing $100M across venture and owned GPU capacity (B300s). We are partnered with Joules Accelerator at Duke Energy, the Energy Innovation Center at Dominion Energy, and Google’s AI for Energy Accelerator. The Role: Mercury is hiring a VP of Utility Solutions to own the go-to market strategy and product vision/execution for our utility customers as our business scales from zero to one. You’ll validate problems with our utility design/pilot partners, develop the product roadmap, design sales demos, ship v1s, and build out the sales/product delivery org as we scale. You’ll partner with our VP of Data Center Solutions to ensure our products meet the full set of requirements to unlock utility power capacity for our data center clients. As a member of Mercury’s Founding Leadership Team, you’ll also be an outward-facing thought leader, requiring deep knowledge of the utility industry as well as familiarity with data center power/workload flexibility solutions. Approximately 25 percent of your time will be spent traveling to industry conferences and speaking events, participating in on-site sales and/or pilot design meetings with utility and data center partners, and attending in-person product planning/brainstorming/whiteboarding sessions with the FLT at our headquarters in Boulder, CO. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to build a high-impact, enterprise-grade software platform from the ground up. The ideal candidate is equally hands-on and outward facing, both a builder and a thought leader, someone who is comfortable talking workload flexibility with data center operators, power interconnection with utilities, API specs with software developers—and company vision with industry leaders and prospective investors. What you’ll do: 1. Own the utility GTM: Design, test, and iterate on the GTM motion for the utility side of the business; collaborate with FLT on sales narratives, product demos, pricing & packaging, and competitive positioning/landscape; support key customer meetings and deliver features for pilot deployments 2. Develop the roadmap: Develop the product strategy for our utility solutions, including: • Interconnection analysis and flexible capacity expansion tools • Data center power/systems integrations (DCIM, BMS) • Utility back office integrations (DERMS, EMS) • Bundled BESS + flex-capacity-expansion offerings • Integrations with GPU flexibility partners (e.g., NVIDIA, Neuralwatt, Pebble, etc.) • Off-site curtailable capacity via load aggregator partners (CPower, Voltus etc.) 3. Drive discovery: Run structured discovery sessions with utility partners to test assumptions, demo features and iterate on product roadmap and strategy 4. Build the platform: Translate roadmap into engineering requirements/user stories/acceptance criteria; establish product operating cadence (OKRs, metrics, sprint ceremonies) and work directly with the development team to deliver platform features 5. Scale the org: Hire, coach and develop a highly effective GTM/sales/product delivery organization 6. Be a thought leader: Speak at industry conferences and attend networking events; write whitepapers and publish articles; be featured in interviews and on podcasts 7. Support fundraising narrative: Contribute to board updates, investor narratives, customer case studies, and fundraising materials with clear product metrics and learnings What you’ll bring: • Minimum 4+ years utility-specific GTM/sales/delivery or product management leadership role • Domain depth in one or more: data center siting/interconnection, power grid/wholesale markets (ISO/RTO), utility back-office systems (DERMS/EMS), data center demand response and/or demand-side flexibility/orchestration • Strong technical fluency: can reason about APIs, technical architecture, data models, telemetry, AI model training/inference, security implications etc. • Customer-obsessed and commercial: skilled at discovery with complex stakeholders and turning insights into shippable value and revenue • Builder’s bias to action: comfortable with ambiguity, short cycles, and tight feedback loops Nice-to-haves: • Zero-to-one enterprise SaaS sales/delivery or product management leadership experience • Proven experience with hyperscaler/colo procurement and interconnection processes • Exposure to BESS/gensets/microgrids, market participation (capacity/ancillary), and DR measurement & verification • Track record building pricing & packaging for enterprise-based models • Prior seed/Series A leadership experience and proven ability to recruit, mentor and scale product/sales/delivery teams Compensation & Benefits: • Competitive base + meaningful equity (founding leadership grant) • Full health benefits, 401(k), and flexible PTO • Annual learning budget and travel to customer sites and team onsite Contact: Mark Gately mark@mercurycomputing.io
