Medstar is seeking an experienced, people-centered Director of Human Resources to help lead a growing, respected organization in emergency medical services. This is a senior leadership role for someone who wants to build, guide, and strengthen an HR function that directly supports caregivers, clinicians, and the communities we serve. This position works closely with the CEO and executive leadership team and plays a central role in shaping culture, talent strategy, and organizational development across a large, mission-driven EMS and healthcare organization. The Director of Human Resources helps ensure we recruit well, support our people, stay compliant, and continue to grow in a thoughtful and sustainable way. Healthcare or EMS experience is highly valued, as is an understanding of the realities of a 24/7 service organization. Experience working with organized labor is helpful, but not required. What you'll do • Partner with the CEO and executive team to set HR strategy that supports Medstar's mission and long-term goals • Lead and develop all core HR functions, including recruiting, retention, employee relations, compensation, benefits, performance management, and compliance • Guide organizational development efforts and help leaders build strong, effective teams • Serve as a trusted advisor to executives, managers, and employees on HR matters • Oversee recruiting strategy and workforce planning to attract and retain high-quality talent • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and programs that support fairness, accountability, and compliance • Manage HR budgets and vendor relationships, including benefits administrators, workers' compensation carriers, legal counsel, and other partners • Maintain awareness of employment law, industry trends, and best practices • Support labor relations as needed and work professionally with union representatives • Help shape training, leadership development, and performance improvement initiatives across the organization What we're looking for • At least 10 years of broad-based HR experience, with a minimum of 6 years in a leadership role • Bachelor's degree in business, human resources, or industrial relations required • Graduate degree and/or PHR/SPHR preferred • Strong communication skills and sound judgment • A practical, organized approach to problem solving • Ability to lead, influence, and build trust at all levels of the organization • Comfort working in a fast-paced healthcare or emergency services environment • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HR systems • Willingness to travel occasionally What you can expect • A senior leadership role with real influence and visibility • The opportunity to shape HR strategy in a respected EMS and healthcare organization • A collaborative executive team that values thoughtful leadership • Work that directly supports frontline professionals who care for patients every day If you are an experienced HR leader looking for meaningful work in emergency services or healthcare, we welcome your interest.
