Design, develop, install, test, and maintain mechanical systems on boats and ships, including propulsion, steering, HVAC, and auxiliary machinery, ensuring compliance with marine standards and supporting vessel construction and sea trials.
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, 3-7 years marine or heavy industrial mechanical engineering experience, proficiency in CAD, knowledge of marine systems and classification society rules, PE license preferred, and ability to work in shipyard environments.
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, installation, testing, and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment on boats and ships. Essential Duties And Responsibilities • Design, evaluate, and implement mechanical systems for propulsion, steering, HVAC, piping, and auxiliary machinery. • Develop detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and specifications for components and assemblies. • Review design and detailed drawings prior releasing to production. • Perform structural and thermal calculations, stress analysis, and fluid dynamics evaluations for marine systems. • Collaborate with naval architects, electrical engineers, and production teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems. • Oversee installation, alignment, and commissioning of machinery and equipment during vessel construction and refit. • Conduct troubleshooting, failure analysis, and provide engineering solutions for system performance issues. • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and classification society regulations (ABS, DNV, Lloyds, USCG, etc.). • Support procurement by reviewing vendor specifications, evaluating equipment, and liaising with suppliers. • Prepare documentation, technical reports, and manuals for ship systems. • Provide on-site support during sea trials and resolve mechanical issues as required. • Occasional travel to suppliers, clients, and sea trials may be required. Education and/or Experience • Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering • 3-7 years of experience in marine, shipbuilding, or heavy industrial mechanical engineering. • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino) • Knowledge of marine propulsion systems, piping, hydraulics, HVAC, and auxiliary systems. • Familiarity with classification society rules and IMO standards. • Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills. • Ability to work in shipyard and onboard environments. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities • Hands-on shipyard or vessel commissioning experience. • Knowledge of welding, materials, and corrosion control in marine environments. • PE (Professional Engineer) license or equivalent certification. • Advanced reading, writing and arithmetic skills are required • Ability to read and interpret documents and instructions • Ability to take directions and follow instructions • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly • Ability to work on a variety of assignments and locations on a daily or hourly basis • Strong ability to be reliable, dependable, and work as a team • Follow oral and written instructions; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population Language Ability Ability to communicate effectively in English Reasoning Ability Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job are medium/heavy in nature.
