Role Overview The Editorial Director will lead Manning’s editorial vision and strategy, overseeing the Development Editors and ensuring that our books meet the needs of today’s technical professionals. This new role requires a unique blend of deep technical knowledge and market insight. The ideal candidate will understand both the craft of publishing and the evolving needs of developers, ensuring that our publications remain authoritative, practical, and highly relevant. Key Responsibilities ● Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Development Editors, providing guidance on book acquisition, development, and execution. ● Shape the editorial direction of the program by identifying high-impact technical topics and guiding how each book is positioned for the market. ● Evaluate book proposals and manuscripts for technical accuracy, market fit, and accessibility to the target audience. ● Work closely with authors to ensure manuscripts strike the right balance between technical depth and developer accessibility. ● Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to align editorial strategy with business goals and reader demand. ● Stay abreast of technology trends (AI, data science, cloud, security, software engineering) and ensure Manning’s list reflects the cutting edge while maintaining foundational works. ● Champion editorial quality, innovation, and relevance across all publications. ● Act as a bridge between the technical community and the publishing market, ensuring content is both accurate and commercially viable. ● Guide authors in making complex technical content approachable and engaging for working professionals. ● Promote a culture of lifelong learning and curiosity within the editorial team. Desired Qualifications ● Broad technical background with deep understanding of software development, computer science, and emerging technologies. ● Full-stack perspective: familiarity with how technologies interact across infrastructure, backend, frontend, and cloud. ● Strong awareness of market demand for technical skills and the ability to guide projects toward high-value, high-impact topics. ● Experience in technical publishing, editing, or authorship with proven ability to shape content for developers and professionals. ● Demonstrated ability to lead editorial teams, mentor staff, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. ● Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills. ● Familiarity with foundational programming literature (e.g., Clean Code, The Pragmatic Programmer, Code Complete, Designing Data-Intensive Applications). ● Understanding of classic and emerging fields such as AI, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, and DevOps. ● Ability to think systemically about technology, recognizing how trends connect and evolve. ● Keen interest in historical and foundational context of technology and programming practices. ● Experience working with author communities, developer advocates, or technical experts is a strong plus.
