Our newest initiative, the Seminal Papers Series, will make foundational research papers in artificial intelligence and related fields accessible to working professionals through clear explanations, practical code, and contextual storytelling. Role Overview We are seeking a Development Editor to work on the Seminal Papers Series. This role is ideal for someone with a research background in AI, computer science, or a closely related field, who also has a passion for helping authors communicate complex research to a broad developer audience. Key Responsibilities · Editorial Development: Partner with authors to shape book proposals, outlines, and manuscripts so they align with the goals of the Seminal Papers Series. · Research Translation: Help authors interpret and contextualize seminal academic papers, ensuring explanations are accessible to developers without extensive research or math backgrounds. · Audience Focus: Ensure manuscripts are written with the working professional in mind—developers, data scientists, and technical practitioners—while keeping secondary audiences (students, researchers) in consideration. · Content Quality: Ensure that each paper is clearly identified, explained in historical and technical context, and accompanied by intuitive explanations, diagrams, and practical code examples where possible. · Pedagogical Support: Encourage authors to include implementation considerations, case studies, and business-relevant applications that bridge the gap between theory and practice. · Series Consistency: Maintain a consistent voice, format, and editorial approach across the series, while allowing each author’s expertise and style to shine through. · Project Management: Coordinate timelines, provide regular feedback, and manage the manuscript through stages from draft to production. Desired Qualifications · Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related field, OR equivalent professional/research experience. · Strong familiarity with academic literature in AI/ML (e.g., transformers, neural networks, retrieval-augmented generation, optimization). · Demonstrated ability to explain complex research concepts to non-specialist audiences. · Experience in technical writing, editing, or teaching is strongly preferred. · Excellent communication, organizational, and collaboration skills. · Familiarity with code examples (Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.) a plus. Why Join Manning? · Contribute to a series that will bridge the gap between research and industry practice for thousands of developers. · Collaborate with leading researchers and practitioners in AI and beyond. · Work in a mission-driven environment where editorial excellence and technical rigor are valued equally. · Flexible, remote-first role with a global team.
