Full Description

Community Engagement Associate About Us: The Maine Women’s Lobby (501c4) works to build gender justice in Maine through legislative advocacy and systems change. The MWL Education Fund (501c3) works to build gender justice in Maine by ensuring our community has the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in gender-equitable public policy advocacy and civic life. We believe that all Mainers, including women, girls, femmes, and non-binary people, must have equal rights and opportunities, and the power to direct their own lives free from sexism and misogyny. What We’re Looking For: The MWL/MWL Education Fund seeks a Community Engagement Associate. The goal of the Community Engagement Associate is to support our mission by growing our community of activists, supporters, and stakeholders, and connecting them with opportunities for education and action. The key duties of this position will lead our efforts to grow a more informed and connected membership community, and engage them through actions and events. The ideal candidate will be: • A community organizer and connector. You are eager to engage people through shared purpose, collective action, and accessible participation. You like to build meaningful relationships, to give people an opportunity to be changemakers, and to steward the leadership of others. Bonus points for experience with the VAN, canvassing, or other key organizing skills. • A party person who is good with details. You enjoy organizing community events, outreach tables, house parties, grassroots actions, or other gatherings. You can keep track of the logistics so that everyone knows their role, where to go, and has what they need. • A grassroots fundraiser. You’re able to invite giving in a way that feels empowering, values-aligned, and non-transactional. Absolutely no experience necessary - but you’re willing to (learn to) make this a part of your work. • Committed to our shared feminist values. You want to topple the patriarchy, build gender justice, call out white supremacy, work toward community care, and honor lived experience - and you believe that effective feminist activism can help to do that. • A good team member. You have integrity, a learner mindset, and a sense of humor. You’re excited to be part of a small team, where each member is both a leader of their own work, and a supporter of the work of others. About this position: This position will help us grow and activate our community during the election season of 2026. It is currently budgeted as a one-year role, but our strong intention is to extend it if possible. Our priority community is rural women, LGBTQ+ and femmes, and caregivers, especially in central and northern Maine. Travel to and programming in this region will be a regular part of this person’s work. As a community organizer, events may take place during evenings and weekends; flexible scheduling is expected. A complete job description can be found at https://www.mainewomen.org/opportunities Work Structure and Environment: This is for a full-time (40-hour) position, in a flexible environment. We are a small, interconnected team. We work hard and have fun, and we seek team members who are excited to contribute to and participate in a feminist, human-centered workplace. We believe in ensuring that the position duties and actual hours worked are in a fair alignment, and flex time is available. People seeking part-time employment (30+ hours/week) will be considered. The office is in Augusta, though most staff work remotely. Depending on the role, travel to Augusta is necessary at least weekly to monthly. Occasional travel to events and functions across the state, and occasional nights or weekends for events (a few times per year, more depending on the role) is required. We Offer: The salary range for this position is $47,000 - 55,000, though the starting salary will be dependent on experience. In fairness to our current team members, we will not negotiate outside the range. We offer generous paid vacation time and sick leave (vacation time includes 6 weeks for vacation and holidays, and additionally we close for the last week of the year at full pay), and paid family and medical leave. Team members receive health and dental insurance (100 percent covered by the employer), and a 3 percent contribution to retirement (with no match) upon one year of employment. Longevity leave or sabbatical is available at five years of continuous employment. Our Process and Timeline: Applications will be accepted through the Maine Association of Nonprofits job portal until the position is filled. Please submit a cover letter and a resume. • Resume Review: Will begin on or around January 5, 2026 • First Interviews: Conducted on/around the week of January 12, 2026. Approximately 45 minutes by televideo. • Second Interviews: Conducted on/around the week of January 19, 2026. Approximately 75 minutes; in-person in Augusta is preferred, televideo is possible. Three reference checks will be requested before a job offer is made. • Position begins: We hope employment will begin on or around February 1, with flexibility for the right candidate. Background Check: A criminal background will not automatically eliminate you from consideration. A criminal history background check may be conducted on the final candidate before employment begins, depending on the role and duties. Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE): Interrupting and dismantling historic and structural inequalities are central to our work and mission. These inequalities have had the greatest impact on the most marginalized members of our society – not only female-identified people, but people of color, Indigenous people, low-income people, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. We aim to center these experiences and voices in the work we do, and we encourage people with these experiences, identities, or members of these communities to apply. Qualified applicants will be considered without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, veteran status, or any other class protected by law. Assistance and/or reasonable accommodations during the application process are available to individuals upon request. To request assistance or accommodation, please contact Brook at brook@mainewomen.org or 207-622-0851 ext 108.
