Full Description

• US-BASED APPLICANTS ONLY - MUST APPLY THROUGH LINKEDIN TO BE CONSIDERED Title: AI Backend Engineer Location: Boston-area candidates preferred. This is a remote position, though the company does prioritize applicants capable of meeting onsite for occasional collaboration Reports to: Head of Engineering Compensation/Benefits: • $150k-$200k base salary (depends on experience) + 10% annual bonus • 100% employer-paid healthcare • Extremely competitive annual salary (DOE) • 401k eligible on first payroll; company will match up to 4% of gross pay • Generous PTO/Holiday Time About Us We're a well-funded startup building an AI-powered marketplace that connects disaster survivors with recovery capital. Our platform helps businesses and homeowners quickly discover and access resources from federal and state agencies, NGOs, nonprofits, and private equity organizations. Using agentic AI, large language models, and advanced data processing, we automate complex application processes—turning weeks of paperwork into minutes. We're working with partners like FEMA to create the financial infrastructure that makes disaster recovery funding faster, smarter, and more accessible. This company was founded from lived experience. After evacuating during the Palisades wildfire in 2025, a member of the leadership team spent months navigating a fragmented and confusing disaster recovery system — an experience that mirrors what millions of survivors face every year: lack of clarity, inconsistent guidance, and overwhelming processes that often fail when people need them most. The broader team has a proven track record of solving complex, large-scale government aid challenges, having previously helped tens of thousands of small businesses recover billions in federal funds during COVID relief efforts. Now, we're applying that expertise to disaster recovery — one of the most urgent, complex, and emotionally charged areas within government. About the Role The primary function is to build and maintain backend systems and AI-powered features. You'll work closely with the Staff/Lead Engineer on backend architecture and AI initiatives, contributing to critical features that help disaster survivors access federal assistance programs. You'll develop robust APIs and services that process disaster data, calculate eligibility for federal programs, and integrate with AI systems to automate complex workflows. You'll work with large-scale databases, real-time data processing, and AI models to build features that make government assistance accessible. You'll collaborate with frontend engineers to deliver seamless user experiences, work with compliance teams to ensure security and regulatory requirements are met and contribute to architecture decisions that shape the platform's future. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI technology while solving real-world problems that impact people's lives during their most vulnerable moments. Tech Stack Python, Go, PostgreSQL, Aurora, AWS (Lambda, S3, RDS), Claude Code, Terraform Key Responsibilities • Backend Development: Build and maintain APIs, services, and data processing pipelines. • AI Integration: Develop AI-powered features using Claude Code and LLM APIs. • Database Work: Design queries, optimize performance, and manage data migrations. • System Design: Contribute to architecture decisions and design scalable solutions. • Code Quality: Write clean, maintainable code and participate in code reviews. • Collaboration: Work with front-end engineers, product managers, and compliance teams. Required Qualifications • 5+ years of software engineering experience • Experience with AI/ML systems, LLM integration, or agentic AI tools (Claude Code or similar AI coding assistants) • Strong 0 to 1 (from scratch) product development experience • Strong backend expertise in Python • Experience with PostgreSQL and database design. • Experience with AWS services (Lambda, S3, RDS, etc.) • Experience building RESTful APIs and microservices • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills • Startup experience - adaptable, team-player attitude. Preferred Qualifications • Some experience with Go • Experience with Terraform or Infrastructure as Code. • Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript (full-stack capability). • Experience with compliance/security requirements (SOC-2, FedRAMP). • Experience with regulated industries or government contracts.
