Organization: Journey to Healing Reports To: Chief Operating Officer & Program Supervisor Location: Downtown/Rivertown | Detroit, MI 48207 Program Dates: February 2026 – May 2026 Program Hours: 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM Monday-Friday Compensation: $28.00–$30.00 per hour Position Type: 1099 Contractor Position Start Date: February 3, 2026 Required Paid Training • January 28, 2026 – Virtual • February 2, 2026 – On-site Position Overview: Journey to Healing is seeking experienced afterschool lead teachers in math, reading, and/or science to support our afterschool program, serving elementary and middle school students. The lead teacher is responsible for leading academic instruction in reading and mathematics while creating a structured and positive learning environment. Journey to Healing is seeking Afterschool Lead Teachers to support our school-based afterschool program: • Afterschool Lead Teacher – Elementary School • Afterschool Lead Teacher – Middle School Both positions work collaboratively with program staff and receive on-site supervisory support to ensure effective instruction and student engagement. Lead Teachers are fully supported and do not work alone. Each classroom includes small class sizes, support from assistant staff, and guidance from an on-site supervisor, allowing teachers to focus on instruction and student engagement. Key Responsibilities: • Lead reading and math instruction during after-school programming • Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons • Facilitate small-group academic rotations • Collaborate with assistant staff and on-site supervisor • Support students with diverse learning needs • Implement positive behavior and classroom management strategies • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and structured classroom environment • Support student engagement and attendance • Curriculum Adaptation: Adapt lessons and teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those with special needs, and follow Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as necessary. Qualifications: • Degree in Education Preferred • Experience teaching or leading instruction with elementary and/or middle school students • Experience working in after-school or educational settings • Strong classroom management and communication skills • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team • Commitment to a supportive, student-centered approach • Experience: At least 3 years of teaching experience. Strong background in math and reading instruction is required. Prior experience in special education is a plus.
