Remote positions at the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) require travel to our Arlington, VA office for two in-person team gatherings each year. Job Summary: The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer is responsible for integrating cloud-based AI technologies into the Institute for Humane Studies' (IHS) strategic plans. Reporting to the Managing Director of IT, the Engineer is charged with designing, creating, and maintaining secure, optimized, and cost-effective cloud-based AI/ML systems for analytics and operations. Additionally, this individual will help develop best practices for using cloud technology in AI/ML. Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Duties/Responsibilities: Maintain and optimize existing AI/ML cloud architecture in AWS. Maintain and optimize existing data infrastructure, including RDS PostGres database, PGVector database, and planning for future graph databases. Stay up to date on AI developments and how new AI technologies can be used to create custom solutions that advance the mission of IHS. Provide relevant training, such as prompt engineering, to better AI/ML integration and utilization amongst IHS staff. Serve as subject matter expert (SME) to triage concerns, issues, and/or difficulty during staff execution of provided tools. Monitor cloud expenses to ensure cost-effectiveness and make recommendations for cost-saving strategies across the entire organization’s cloud infrastructure. Assist in the development of strategies to foster technical innovation in creating opportunities with partners to own well-placed technical AI/ML tools. Required Skills/Qualifications: 5+ years of experience in cloud engineering, preferably in AWS. Proven experience and success in a customer-facing role. Strong knowledge of databases, including the database engines and hosting option in AWS. RDS PostGres database and PGVector database highly preferred. Experience with AI and machine learning technologies, matched by experience with integrating these technologies into cloud systems. Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, relationship building, and communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrable ability to discuss, teach, and inform non-technical individuals of relevant and applicable topics and functions related to the cloud, AI, and other forms of technology. Knowledge of and appreciation for the classical liberal tradition.
