You would modernize business applications and data flows through scripting, API integration, and technical initiatives from discovery to production cutover.
The role requires 12+ years in business systems, integration, or software engineering, strong PowerShell or Python skills, US citizenship, and eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
The Senior Business Systems Engineer designs, builds, integrates, and modernizes the business applications and data flows that support organizational operations. Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering & Architecture, this senior individual contributor owns complex technical initiatives from discovery and solution design through implementation, migration, production cutover, and operational handoff. The role combines business application architecture and administration with hands-on scripting, database work, API integration, and data migration engineering. Given a business objective, the engineer independently investigates unfamiliar systems, identifies missing requirements and dependencies, develops a practical delivery plan, and resolves technical obstacles while obtaining necessary business decisions and approvals. The engineer personally develops automation, migration tools, and working prototypes; validates proposed solutions during requirements discovery; and partners with software developers when a solution needs further development into a supported product. The role also improves application reliability, data quality, and business processes across departments including Finance, HR, Contracts, Legal, Operations, and Marketing. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Business Partnership and Technical Ownership Partner with business stakeholders on CRM, accounting and financial systems, HRIS, contract lifecycle management (CLM), marketing automation, websites, and CMS platforms. Translate business objectives into technical requirements, acceptance criteria, and an executable plan; independently investigate source systems, data, undocumented behavior, dependencies, and failure scenarios without requiring step-by-step technical direction. Own solution design across application boundaries, including systems of record, data ownership, interfaces, security controls, and operational responsibilities; select native configuration, low-code automation, scripting, or custom development based on maintainability and business need. Maintain a prioritized improvement roadmap with stakeholders, the Senior Director of Engineering & Architecture, the Director of IT Services, and the CTO; communicate options, estimates, dependencies, and risks, and escalate decisions that exceed delegated authority. Automation and Integration Engineering Develop and maintain reusable PowerShell or Python scripts, modules, and internal tools for application integration, data processing, migration, reconciliation, and operational automation. Build reliable API-based workflows with appropriate authentication, pagination, rate-limit handling, retries, checkpoints, and recovery; design repeatable operations that avoid unintended duplicates or changes when resumed after failure. Maintain scripts, automation tools, and integration code in Git using consistent branching, peer reviews, and documentation. Apply DevOps and CI/CD practices to automate testing, validate quality and security, and deploy approved changes across environments. Coordinate with Engineering andDevOps teams to protect credentials, track releases, and establish deployment verification and rollback procedures. Build tools with structured logging, secure configuration, and managed dependencies; use dry runs to verify expected changes before modifying production data.\ Use AI-assisted tooling where appropriate to improve engineering productivity; validate generated outputs and technical assumptions before incorporating them into production workflows. Prototyping and Software Engineering Partnership Build working proofs of concept during requirements discovery to test API behavior, data assumptions, performance, failure cases, and implementation options; use the results to improve requirements and establish technical feasibility. Deliver clear technical specifications, data models, interface contracts, representative test data, acceptance tests, and known limitations when working with software developers on a production solution; remain engaged through validation and release. Own the automation and migration tooling developed within the role's scope. Agree with Engineering on when a tool or prototype requires product development, additional engineering controls, or a change in maintenance ownership; establish support responsibilities before production adoption. Application Operations, Vendors, and Knowledge Transfer Own technical administration and lifecycle improvements for assigned enterprise applications; configure forms, fields, workflows, business rules, permissions, reports, and automation within delegated change authority, maintaining an accurate application inventory. Implement approved access and data-handling controls, including protection of credentials, sensitive records, staging data, and logs; preserve client or tenant separation and coordinate policy exceptions with IT leadership and security resources. Manage application and integration vendor relationships with the Director of IT Services; evaluate technical recommendations, verify deliverables, forecast licensing and project costs, and obtain required spending approval from the Director of IT Services and/or CTO before committing funds. Partner with vendors to investigate and reproduce application defects, document business impact, and submit actionable bug reports and feature requests. Track progress, escalate unresolved issues, coordinate workarounds, and validate fixes against agreed acceptance criteria before closure. Resolve escalated application and integration incidents after service desk intake, coordinate Engineering and vendor support, communicate impacts, and eliminate recurring failures. Participate in on-call support for assigned applications and integrations as coverage is established. Routine on-call duties may decrease as SRE coverage is established, while the role retains application ownership and escalation support. Maintain architecture, configuration, and migration documentation, plus runbooks for operation, diagnosis, recovery, maintenance, and escalation. Train users and departmental champions, support adoption, and mentor technical peers through design reviews, troubleshooting, and knowledge transfer. Required Qualifications 12+ years of progressively responsible experience across business systems, systems integration, software engineering, data engineering, or automation engineering, including recent hands-on ownership of complex enterprise application and data initiatives. Strong practical proficiency in PowerShell or Python, with demonstrated experience personally developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining reusable scripts, modules, and tools used in production or controlled migration work. Demonstrated experience building and troubleshooting API integrations, including authentication, pagination, rate limits, data formats, error handling, retries, and recovery from partial failures. Demonstrated ownership of complex migrations or consolidations involving large datasets and multiple systems, including source profiling, transformation, exception resolution, incremental synchronization, validated cutover, and recovery planning. Ability to independently turn an ambiguous business objective into a technically sound solution and delivery plan; discover missing information, validate assumptions, research unfamiliar systems, resolve obstacles, and surface decisions requiring stakeholder input. Experience applying version control, testing, review, logging, documentation, and secure handling of credentials and sensitive data to automation and integration work. Hands-on enterprise application administration and configuration experience, including forms, workflows, permissions, reporting, and maintainable no-code or low-code automation across multiple business functions. Experience developing prototypes to validate requirements and working with software developers on technical design, interfaces, testing, and the transition to supported production solutions. Practical experience using automation and AI to improve business workflows and engineering productivity, with validation of outputs and appropriate protection of business information. Strong diagnostic judgment and communication skills; ability to explain technical tradeoffs, coordinate vendors and business stakeholders, lead technical work, and remain accountable through delivery and operational handoff. US Citizenship is required. Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Preferred Qualifications Practical proficiency in both PowerShell and Python, and experience with additional languages or application development frameworks. Strong SQL skills and practical relational database knowledge, including schema design, joins, keys, indexes, transactions, data staging, transformation, deduplication, reconciliation, and investigation of data-quality issues. Experience using cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure for data storage, secure data transfer, managed databases, and application integration, including configuring identity and access management, authentication and authorization, service identities, and secure management of credentials and secrets. Experience with enterprise CRM, accounting or ERP, HRIS, contract lifecycle management, marketing automation, and CMS platforms comparable to the application portfolio. Experience with integration platforms, event-driven workflows, job orchestration, and automated deployment or release pipelines. Experience improving business systems in an organization with a small internal technical team and multiple external providers. Relevant application, integration, data, or architecture certifications. An active security clearance. Travel: Up to six weeks per year Travel percentage reflects an estimate and is subject to change dependent on business needs.
