Full Description

Inner Strength Education Development Director (Mission-Driven) Location: Remote (occasional travel for donor meetings; Philadelphia-based relationships a plus) Reports to: Managing Director Compensation: $75,000–$125,000 annually, commensurate with experience and scope This role may be structured full-time or part-time (20–30 hours/week), with compensation adjusted accordingly. We are flexible: this position offers a self-directed schedule and a results-oriented work culture. About Inner Strength Education Inner Strength Education is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth to realize their higher potential through mindfulness and systems thinking education. Founded in 2014 by educator and author Amy Edelstein, our CASEL-recommended, evidence-based programs support adolescents—particularly those navigating trauma, stress, and systemic inequities—by building skills in emotional regulation, critical thinking, compassion, and self-awareness. To date, we have served more than 35,000 students across 29 Philadelphia public schools with our 3-month program, backed by a decade of published academic research demonstrating statistically significant outcomes. Our work has been recognized with a Philadelphia Social Innovator’s Award and a Philadelphia City Council Resolution honoring our contributions to youth wellbeing and violence prevention. We are entering an exciting phase of growth: strengthening and sustaining our Philadelphia programming while laying the groundwork for thoughtful expansion through national train-the-trainer, programs supported by our Inner Strength AI Coach. The Opportunity We are seeking a mission-driven, experienced Development Director who is passionate about helping to build the scaffolding for Inner Strength Education’s expansion. Inner Strength has built significant goodwill among philanthropists and corporations over our last successful 11 years, providing strong opportunities for an energetic, talented, and detail oriented Development Director. Now is the time to set the organization up for success for our next decade, and the right candidate will play an important role. This is not a highly siloed role in a large team setting—it is an opportunity for a seasoned fundraiser who enjoys creating the roadmap and seeing the results of their work, as they operate independently, shape fundraising strategy, and build authentic relationships around a powerful transformational mission. Because we are a small organization, this role will touch all areas of development. However, the strategic emphasis is clear: Primary focus: Major individual gifts and corporate giving Year 1 priority: Secure funding to sustain and grow current Philadelphia programming while cultivating early-stage major and corporate donors. • Establish and manage a strong portfolio of individual and corporate prospects • Re-engage existing donors and identify new aligned supporters • Close approximately $250,000–$400,000 in total philanthropic support (adjusted proportionally for part-time roles), with an emphasis on relationship-building, test gifts, and stewardship Year 2 focus: Transition cultivated relationships into higher-level fundraising to support expansion efforts. • Increase average gift size and secure second and multi-year commitments • Deepen corporate partnerships and major donor engagement • Raise approximately $450,000–$700,000+ annually as relationships mature and expansion priorities are introduced After two years of consistently exceeding performance expectations, compensation may be adjusted to reflect impact, including consideration of increased base salary and/or performance-based incentives. This is an ideal role for someone who wants meaningful ownership, flexibility, and the chance to directly connect philanthropic partners to life-changing work with youth. Major & Individual Giving (Primary Focus) • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major individual donors • Build and manage a personalized portfolio using thoughtful moves management • Partner with leadership on donor meetings, proposals, and stewardship Corporate Giving & Partnerships • Identify and cultivate corporate funders aligned with youth development, education, and community wellbeing • Develop sponsorships and partnership opportunities that reflect Inner Strength’s values and impact Grants & Institutional Support • Manage a targeted grants pipeline (research, tracking, deadlines, stewardship) • Collaborate on proposal development and reporting (with internal support) • The primary responsibility for foundation management will be relationship-building, in collaboration with internal partners on proposal development and reporting. Collaboration & Infrastructure • Work closely with the Marketing & Communications Director (who brings development experience) to create donor-facing materials, narratives, and impact communications • Maintain accurate donor records and reporting in the CRM • Provide clear updates and insights to leadership and the Board Who You Are We are looking for someone who is energized by our mission, who builds lasting authentic relationships, who is collaborative and successfully operates with a high degree of autonomy and accountability, and who loves contributing to the lasting well-being of thousands of young people. You likely bring: • 5+ years of nonprofit development experience, with demonstrated success in major gifts and/or corporate giving • A track record of securing five- and six-figure gifts • Comfort operating independently in a small, entrepreneurial organization • Strong relationship-building and communication skills • A collaborative, team-oriented person who enjoys working closely with others and contributing to a small, supportive leadership team. • Excellent organizational skills and follow-through • Experience with donor databases/CRMs like NeonCRM • Strong writing skills • And ideally: familiarity with Philadelphia’s philanthropic landscape (helpful but not required) • A genuine interest in mindfulness, social-emotional learning, youth development, or trauma-informed education • Alignment with Inner Strength Education’s values of calm, curiosity and care Why This Role Is Different • True flexibility: This is not flexibility in name only. We care about outcomes, not rigid schedules. • Ownership: In alignment with the organization’s strategic direction, you will shape Development strategy and priorities, not just execute tasks. • Supportive leadership: You’ll work alongside an experienced Founder/Executive Director, Managing Director, and a Marketing & Communications Director with development experience. • Culture of excellence & encouragement: You’ll work alongside others who hold themselves to the highest standards of professionalism, productivity, accountability, and support, where there is genuine room for a healthy work-life balance because we work smarter not just harder. • Meaningful impact: Your work directly sustains and expands programs that measurably improve the lives of Philadelphia youth. We care deeply about our work, value kindness and clarity, and are committed to being the kind of organization people are proud to fundraise for. To Apply Please submit a resume and a brief cover letter describing your relevant experience and interest in Inner Strength Education to: Susan Aguilar susan@innerstrengtheducation.org Please note: Applications submitted without a cover letter will not be considered. We strongly encourage candidates who bring lived experience, diverse perspectives, and a deep commitment to youth wellbeing to apply.
