Full Description

The general range for this full-time position is $105,000 – 150,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education. Humane World for Animals, a global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking an Editorial Director for the Story and Video department. In this position you will lead the organization’s editorial team and content output, including website content, reports, advertisements, event items, outreach materials and merchandise. You will serve as editorial brand director, developing and guiding strategy on the storytelling, style, messaging and tone of organizational communications, ensuring they cohere and support our vision and mission. You will also manage and enhance the brand by encouraging strategic and aesthetic consistency on all channels and venues and by engaging staff in the broad organizational vision. Responsibilities: • Manages editorial teams for annual reports and other branding and outreach materials; contributes to website content strategy, storytelling and editorial review, shaping communications that inspire constituents to engage in action and advocacy that supports the organizational mission. Serves as editor-in-chief for HumanePro.org; • Develops and refines the editorial voice of the organization and affiliates through analysis of current supporters, identification of target audiences, education and outreach to staff, and alignment of messaging with key organizational goals. Manages house style and editorial components of brand guide and assists staff in implementing brand protocols so that all channels are in alignment; • Manages, coaches, and develops a team of editorial professionals, motivating them to meet and exceed goals; fosters training and growth opportunities; • Develops and implements an editorial strategy that supports and extends organizational goals and strengthens the organization’s brand. Serves as the editorial representative for high-level discussions of organizational communications strategy. Coordinates efforts to integrate and optimize editorial content across print and digital platforms and achieve widespread consistency in the voice and look of the organization; • Edits and writes stories for organizational channels; • Fosters a flexible, change-oriented environment that encourages new ideas and reinvention. Working with communications and program teams, evolves and innovates content. Implements and maintain standards of excellence and best practices for advocacy journalism, including priority screens for content; • Oversees editorial budget; • Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field required; • A minimum of eight (8) years of related work experience required; • Management experience in a related field, which has included management and leadership responsibilities for staff, strategy development and execution, and fiscal and budget accountabilities, preferably in the animal welfare arena required; • Strong journalistic background; understanding of practices, ethics, rhetorical styles and how they translate to an advocacy role; • Strong grasp of branding and storytelling; • Leadership ability in work setting. Flexible, willing to learn, and anticipates the needs of self and staff; • Ability to set a positive tone for employees during their day; • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive; • Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills; • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; • Knowledge of business operations, including effective budget development and management processes; • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes; • Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred. This is a full-time remote position based in the United States. Must be flexible to accommodate Eastern Time, as needed.
