Full Description

About the Role As the Engineering Manager, Brain Health Platform, you will lead the development of innovative components designed to address mental health comorbidities associated with chronic pain. You will oversee a multidisciplinary team building agentic AI systems for pain reprocessing therapy and mindfulness interventions, while also ensuring these solutions effectively complement our existing physical and exercise therapy solutions to address the underlying causes of persistent pain. You will manage a team of engineers who will develop and deploy these brain health solutions at scale. As a key leader, you will collaborate with senior leadership, product management, clinical teams, and coordinate across our three physical locations - San Francisco HQ, Montreal, Canada, and Bangalore, India. The goal of the Brain Health pod is to build treatment experiences grounded in the latest science to help members understand and retrain how their brain and nervous system process pain. Specifically, you will drive the creation of features that focus on mindset strategies, confidence in movement, and skill building for daily life. By applying these evidence-based mind-body therapies, we aim to help members achieve measurable reductions in pain. As a hands-on engineering leader, you're expected to stay close to the technology: understanding your team's full stack, contributing code, and regularly reviewing and merging pull requests (~15% of your time). We enjoy a continuous deployment DevOps culture, and take owner-operator pride in supporting our code in production. Our stack includes Go, gRPC, Temporal, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, Node.js/TypeScript (NestJS), GraphQL, React, and React Native. Our workflow is trunk-based CI/CD, and our security/compliance posture is at the highest standards of healthcare, including HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and CCPA. What You'll Accomplish • Build next-generation therapeutic AI agents that deliver personalized pain reprocessing and mindfulness interventions, ensuring clinical efficacy in retraining pain perception while maintaining engaging, empathetic user experiences. • Architect and scale a unified education platform that intelligently serves pain science and mindset retraining content, tracks learning progress, and personalizes educational pathways to help members build confidence in movement and daily life skills. • Develop the technical strategy for brain health initiatives with your product management partner and clinical stakeholders, ensuring alignment between technological capabilities and therapeutic best practices. • Design robust AI architectures for conversational therapy bots that maintain context over multiple sessions, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and adapt therapeutic approaches based on member progress. • Establish MLOps practices specific to mental health AI applications, including model monitoring for therapeutic effectiveness, safety guardrails, and compliance with mental health care standards. • Drive innovation in natural language processing and affective computing to enhance the therapeutic alliance between AI agents and members. • Collaborate with clinical teams to validate AI interventions against evidence-based therapeutic protocols and measure clinical outcomes. • Build cross-functional partnerships with content creators, clinical psychologists, and data scientists to create a comprehensive brain health ecosystem. Hinge Health Hybrid Model We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program. Basic Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field • 5+ years of experience managing teams of 5+ technologists (mix of engineers and ML researchers/scientists) • 5+ years of experience building and deploying ML/NLP solutions at scale (thousands to millions of DAU) • Experience with conversational AI, dialogue systems, or chatbot development Preferred Qualifications • Master’s degree or higher in Machine Learning, Computational Psychology, or a related field • 3+ years of experience developing conversational or agentic AI systems using LLMs (e.g., GPT, Claude, LLaMA), including techniques such as prompt engineering, RAG, fine-tuning, or reinforcement learning • Proven understanding of responsible AI and ethical model design, particularly within healthcare or sensitive data environments • Experience building or deploying digital mental health or therapeutic AI applications, with familiarity in CBT, DBT, or other evidence-based modalities • Working knowledge of mental health privacy regulations (HIPAA, state-specific laws) and secure data practices • Proficiency in modern development and ML infrastructure (Python, TypeScript, Node.js/NestJS, vector databases, LangChain, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS services like Bedrock/SageMaker, and CI/CD pipelines) Compensation This position will have an annual salary, plus equity and benefits. Please note the annual salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
