The COO is both a strategic leader and a visible community ambassador, someone who can manage budgets, cultivate donors and partners, and confidently represent Habitat to community leaders, funders, and the public. Core Responsibilities: Organizational Leadership • Serve as the senior staff leader, providing direction and oversight to all departments and programs. • Ensure alignment between Board policy, strategic priorities, and day-to-day operations. • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and mission-focused organizational culture. • Supervise and support senior staff. Financial Management & Budgeting • Develop and manage the annual operating and program budgets in partnership with the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee. • Monitor financial performance, cash flow, and sustainability across all departments, including the Stores. • Provide regular, accurate financial reports and forecasts to the Board. • Ensure strong internal controls, fiscal compliance, and readiness for audits and required filings. Fundraising, Grant Writing & Resource Development • Serve as a key leader in fundraising and resource development efforts. • Actively cultivate and steward relationships with donors, sponsors, foundations, faith partners, and community supporters. • Identify grant opportunities and lead or support grant writing, reporting, and compliance activities (grant writing experience is a strong plus). • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to support fundraising events and donor engagement strategies. Community Relations & Public Representation • Serve as the primary public face and spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity of Mason County. • Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, local governments, businesses, and partner organizations. • Represent Habitat at public events, meetings, media opportunities, and speaking engagements. • Advocate for affordable housing and Habitat’s mission throughout Mason County. Program & Operational Oversight • Provide executive oversight of Habitat programs and Store operations through department leadership. • Ensure programs are mission-aligned, financially sustainable, and responsive to community needs. • Apply construction management insight, where applicable, to support informed decision-making, risk management, and realistic project planning without assuming day-to-day site supervision. • Support department leaders in balancing operational capacity, staffing, and resources. Board Partnership & Governance Support • Work closely with the Board of Directors to support effective governance and informed decision-making. • Prepare reports, data, and recommendations for Board and committee meetings. • Support Board engagement in fundraising, community relations, and strategic planning. Qualifications: Required • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience. • Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience in a nonprofit, small business, or mission-driven organization. • Demonstrated experience in budgeting, financial oversight, and organizational management. • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, including public speaking and donor engagement. • Proven ability to lead, support, and hold senior staff accountable. Preferred • Construction management, residential building, or related field experience. • Grant writing and grant management experience. • Fundraising or development experience. • Experience working directly with a Board of Directors. • Familiarity with Habitat for Humanity or affordable housing initiatives. Work Environment: • This role requires flexibility, including occasional evenings and weekends for community events, meetings, and fundraising activities.
