CO-TEACHER / Assistant Teacher Position Type: Full-Time / Part-time Reports To: Program Administrator Hours: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (flexible based on program needs) POSITION SUMMARY The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in implementing curriculum, supervising children, maintaining the classroom environment, and ensuring children's health and safety. MICHIGAN LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (R 400.8125) Education and Experience: ● High school diploma or GED ● 6 months experience in licensed child care ● CDA credential or associate/bachelor's degree in ECE (preferred) PLUS: ● Valid Michigan Child Care Background Check clearance (R 400.8110) ● CPR and First Aid certification (must obtain within 90 days) ● Complete 16 hours annual professional development (R 400.8131) ● Complete health and safety training within 90 days: ○ Prevention of shaken baby syndrome and child maltreatment ○ Recognition and reporting of child abuse and neglect ○ Prevention and control of infectious diseases ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Classroom Support: ● Assist Lead Teacher with curriculum implementation ● Prepare and organize materials ● Set up learning centers and activities ● Support individual children during work time ● Help with classroom transitions Child Supervision: ● Maintain active supervision at ALL times (R 400.8140) ● Conduct name-to-face attendance checks ● Monitor children during all activities ● Supervise bathroom breaks ● Accompany children during outdoor play ● Ensure ratios maintained during staff breaks Daily Care: ● Assist with arrival and dismissal routines ● Support children during mealtimes ● Monitor rest/quiet time ● Help children with toileting and handwashing ● Manage minor first aid needs Health & Safety: ● Follow all health and safety protocols ● Report signs of illness or injury immediately ● Complete incident reports as needed ● Participate in emergency drills ● Maintain clean, sanitized environment Classroom Maintenance: ● Clean and sanitize toys and surfaces per schedule ● Organize materials and supplies ● Restock bathroom and classroom supplies ● Maintain emergency bag contents ● Complete daily cleaning tasks Documentation: ● Assist with attendance tracking ● Document observations as requested ● Help update BrightWheel with photos and notes ● Complete required logs and forms Communication: ● Greet families warmly at arrival/dismissal ● Share brief updates about child's day ● Report concerns to Lead Teacher ● Participate in staff meetings Professional Development: ● Attend required training sessions ● Implement feedback from Lead Teacher ● Seek opportunities to grow skills ● Support program mission and values KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES ● Basic understanding of preschool child development ● Patience and genuine care for children ● Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team ● Willingness to learn Montessori methods ● Clear communication skills ● Physical stamina ● Flexibility and positive attitude PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS ● Ability to lift up to 40 lbs ● Sit on floor and at child-sized furniture ● Stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel throughout day ● Visual and auditory acuity to supervise children ● Ability to respond quickly to emergencies WORKING CONDITIONS ● Preschool classroom with 10-12 children ● Indoor and outdoor environments ● Noise level moderate to high ● Work collaboratively with Lead Teacher Job Types: Full-time, Part-time Pay: From $15.00 per hour Expected hours: 40 per week Work Location: In person
