Full Description

## About the role As the Human Interface Design Portfolio Manager you will define Design portfolio planning activities across the HID landscape and execute robust portfolio management processes aligned with organizational goals and strategic objectives. The ideal candidate brings extensive program management expertise, excels at cross‑functional leadership, and approaches work with a pragmatic, results‑oriented mindset. ### How you’ll contribute day to day You will lead end-to-end portfolio and resource management across the Human Interface Design organization, spanning Vehicle OS generations, Mobile Apps, Web Properties, Foundations, and Advanced UX workstreams. You will partner with the Director of Design Operations, Directors of Design, and Product and Engineering Portfolio managers to design, refine, and operationalize portfolio management processes that enable long-range planning and organizational clarity. Early identification of risks, constraints, and interdependencies is important; you will develop clear mitigation strategies and action plans that keep teams aligned and moving forward. Prioritization will be a constant: you will help ensure the organization focuses on the highest value work and enable teams to forecast, plan, and execute with confidence. Strategic influencing and relationship building are essential as you align teams and leaders around shared priorities, ensuring work is appropriately staffed and consistently delivered. You will employ modern project management methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, Lean) and leverage GM enterprise tools — including the Atlassian suite, Jira Advanced Roadmaps, and Power BI — to drive operational rigor and cross-team visibility. Communicating portfolio health, outcomes, and risks with transparency, and tailoring narratives for Directors, VPs, and cross-functional partners, will be a regular part of your work. There is also an expectation to contribute thought leadership, role model effective operational behaviors, and mentor others to elevate HID’s portfolio management maturity and operational excellence. ### Skills, background, and experience we expect A BS in Business, Engineering, Human Centered disciplines, or equivalent experience is required, demonstrating strong analytical and operational capability. You must have 7+ years of experience in Project Management, Product Management, or Operations leadership managing large, diverse, and multiprogram portfolios spanning complex ecosystems such as software, hardware, services, or automotive systems. You should be proven in planning, managing, and optimizing portfolios at scale, including multiyear roadmaps and cross-platform design initiatives that involve high-dependency workstreams (for example: Vehicle OS generations, mobile apps, web properties, design systems, and advanced UX). Expertise in portfolio management frameworks and capacity planning tools is required, including the Atlassian suite, Jira Advanced Roadmaps, Power BI, and related enterprise systems. An ability to interpret technical documentation, UX workflows, and design system dependencies and translate them into actionable portfolio and resource plans is essential. You will be expected to build data driven forecasts, scenario models, and resource strategies to inform leadership decisions. Exceptional communication and storytelling skills are required, with the ability to synthesize complexity into clear narratives for Directors, VPs, Tech Leads, PMs, and Designers. Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, with demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority across multiple functions and levels, are necessary. You must be able to operate in ambiguity, create clarity, and lead teams through changing tools, processes, and operating models. Remaining calm under pressure, managing escalations, resetting expectations, and navigating competing priorities in fast-moving environments are all part of this role. An analytical mindset with commitment to continuous improvement in systems, processes, and operational rigor is expected. Ability to travel up to 10% domestically. ### Things that will give you a competitive edge Experience at the 10+ years level leading project, product, or portfolio management efforts within complex, multiplatform ecosystems — ideally spanning software, hardware, services, or automotive domains — will make a candidate stand out. Demonstrated change leadership experience, especially in environments undergoing large-scale transformation across systems, operating models, or organizational structures, is valuable. Experience building or scaling portfolio management and governance frameworks that support multiyear planning, capacity modeling, and strategic prioritization across large design or product organizations is also helpful. Familiarity with automotive product development or other highly interdependent ecosystems is a plus. Professional certifications such as PMP, PRINCE2, Six Sigma, or Certified Scrum. Master are noted as advantageous. ### A few words about GM and what we offer Our vision is a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, and we embrace the responsibility to lead the change that will make our world better, safer and more equitable for all.
