Maintenance Assistance Job Description STATUS: Part- Time REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager COMPENSATION: $20 ABOUT: FirstPres Church of Hayward (FPCH) is a historic congregation and missional community striving to love our world well. Guided by our core beliefs and a commitment to anti-racist practices, we seek to fulfill our mission by serving our community through our four areas of ministry: Community Outreach (homeless shelters, food pantry, Recovery Cafe, and more), Church Life (congregational ministry engagement), HGG Childcare Center, and The Chabot Theater. DESCRIPTION: The Maintenance Assistant supports the Facilities Manager in maintaining the buildings, grounds, and equipment of First Presbyterian Church of Hayward and its related properties. This role helps ensure that all facilities are clean, safe, functional, and welcoming. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Assist with general maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of all FirstPres facilities, including offices, classrooms, community spaces, and outreach areas such as the shelter, food pantry, and shared grounds. • Perform basic plumbing, electrical, painting, and carpentry work under supervision. • Set up and break down rooms for worship services, meetings, events, and programs, including moving chairs, tables, and other equipment. • Maintain outdoor areas by sweeping walkways, collecting trash, watering plants, and assisting with seasonal landscaping. • Conduct regular safety checks (lighting, exits, alarms, etc.) and promptly report maintenance or safety issues to the Facilities Manager. • Participate in day-today operations of the food pantry as needed • Assist with deliveries, furniture moves, and coordination with contractors and vendors. • Follow all safety procedures and ensure compliance with church policies and OSHA standards. • Support emergency response efforts (e.g., weather damage, plumbing leaks, etc.) as needed. • Other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager or Business Administrator. QUALIFICATION • High school diploma or equivalent required. • Previous experience in building maintenance, custodial work, or a related trade preferred. • Basic knowledge of tools, maintenance procedures, and workplace safety. • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor (standing, bending, climbing ladders, etc.). • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team. • Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends for events or emergencies. • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment aligned with FirstPres values.
