Head of Security Reports to: Director of Operations Supervises: Security guard (one) Status: Non-exempt Summary: First Presbyterian (FPC) is an inclusive, urban city church with two preschools in the center of Uptown Charlotte. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we bring our diverse social and theological perspectives to be woven together in a caring community of believers for Christ in the heart of Charlotte. FPC is in immediate need of a full-time dependable, alert, unarmed Head of Security. The position is an essential part of a two-person security team and involves a mix of access control, patrolling, emergency response, and supervision. The ability to cultivate a welcoming environment for members, students, staff and visitors is essential. This is a highly visible and family-facing role. The ideal candidate will have strong observational skills, a professional attitude, and the ability to handle incidents calmly and effectively. This 37.5 hour per week year-round hourly position reports to the Director of Operations. The position is benefits and over-time (rare) eligible. Responsibilities: • Ensure only staff and parents with proper badge and key fobs are admitted to campus. • Patrol premises for suspicious activity and to ensure safety. Patrolling is done on foot with limited time spent monitoring surveillance equipment or cameras. • Responsive to emergencies including medical incidents or security breaches. • Assist with the supervision of student arrivals and dismissals (car pool). • Document daily activities and incidents as required. • Supervise, train, and schedule one FT security guard. Additional details regarding core responsibilities: • Access Control: Monitor entrance and exit of visitors, employees, parents, children and vehicles. Enforce check-in/out procedures and greet families. Offer a friendly face and a warm welcome to children and their parents at drop-off and pick-up times. Assist with supervising children during arrival and dismissal to ensure a smooth and safe transition. Deter trespassers or suspicious individuals from the property. • Information and Visitor Support: Answer basic questions from parents and direct them to the appropriate staff for more detailed inquiries. Act as a point of contact for visitors, provide directions, and ensure they are escorted to their destination. • Patrol and Perform Surveillance: Conduct regular on-foot patrols of both indoor and outdoor areas to identify and deter potential threats, trespassers, or suspicious activities. Maintain a visible presence throughout the property, including in schools, common areas, playgrounds, entrances, vacant building, and parking lots. Ensure entry points are secure. • Emergency Response: Respond quickly to medical incidents, security breaches, severe weather, facility threats, alarms, and other emergencies. Ability to coordinate with police and emergency personnel as needed. This includes assisting with safety drills, evacuations, shelter-in-place procedures, and medical first aid, such as CPR and AED, etc. • Liaison: Maintain relationships with external partners including law enforcement agencies and security vendors. • Reporting: Maintain detailed records of daily activities, observations, and any incidents. Write reports for management and document any security infractions or unusual situations. • Conflict Resolution: Use trauma-informed and age-appropriate de-escalation techniques to resolve conflicts peacefully while maintaining order and calm. • Rule Enforcement: Intervene appropriately in situations that may result in injury or disruption. Enforce preschools and church rules and regulations. Follow safety protocols and policies at all times. • Community Engagement: Build trusting relationships with children, families, and staff by reinforcing safety expectations with warmth and clarity. • Facilities Support: Monitor maintenance needs: Observe and report any facility issues, such as a broken gate, faulty lighting, or a slippery floor, to prevent potential hazards. Assist with opening and closing the facility. May include locking up/unlocking, setting alarms, and ensuring all areas are properly secured. Manage parking and traffic: Direct vehicles during busy drop-off and pick-up hours to ensure a safe and orderly flow of traffic. Monitor outdoor areas: Ensure playground equipment is safe and functioning correctly and that the outdoor play area is free of debris. Parking Lots: Patrol parking lot, set gates to lift/lower for special events and when gates are out of service, and escort employees to/from parking lot as needed. • Work independently and perform duties in weather conditions including rain, heat, or cold. • Training and Awareness: Assist with conducting occasional training for staff regarding security awareness, policies, and procedures. Qualifications and Required Skills: • A bachelor’s degree in security management or a related major is preferred. • Strong working knowledge of public safety regulations and legal procedures. Familiarity with safety and security protocols. • Prior school security work experience strongly preferred. • Minimum 3 years of supervisory security experience required. • Reliable, punctual, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision. • Experience: Prior experience in early childhood, school safety, security, law enforcement, and/or military service helpful. • Ability to remain vigilant and attentive for extended periods. • Climb stairs, walk long distances, stand, and remain on foot for extended periods. Lift or move equipment or barriers as needed. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. • Ability to remain professional, compassionate, calm and effective in both non-emergency and emergency situations. Possess emotional intelligence, patience, and composed demeanor, especially under pressure. • Willingness and ability to complete/obtain specific state or employer mandated training and licensing. Cost covered by church and preschool. • Licensing and certifications: Current infant/child CPR, AED, and First Aid certification is required. Basic self-defense training preferred. • Background check: Ability to pass a comprehensive background check. • Communication: Respectful, tactful communication style required with strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. • Familiarity with surveillance systems and mobile technology a plus. • Comfortable working outdoors and in varied weather conditions. • Professional appearance. Hours: The work week will average 37.5 - 40 hours. Work schedule is Monday – Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM (30-minute unpaid lunch). Onsite work is required (no remote work possible) and occasional Saturday or Sunday hours may be requested for special events.
