Lead Automation Engineer – Electrical & Controls Systems About the Company Our client is an employee-owned engineering and systems integration firm that designs and builds custom hydraulic, electrical, and control systems for marine, defense, and oil & gas projects. About the Role This position sits within a growing Electrical & Controls Division and will serve as the technical lead for automation and control systems. The role blends hands-on programming with leadership, mentoring, and customer-facing project work. You’ll be responsible for designing, programming, and commissioning custom automation systems from concept through delivery, while guiding a small team of engineers. Key Responsibilities • Lead automation design and PLC/HMI development for turnkey electro-hydraulic systems. • Program, test, and commission custom control systems (primarily Rockwell / Allen-Bradley, some Siemens). • Collaborate closely with electrical engineers to align control logic, panel design, and wiring schematics. • Mentor junior controls engineers and support technical development across the team. • Interface with EPCs, contractors, and end clients on documentation, specifications, and reviews. • Support FAT/SAT, startup, and commissioning — approx. 10–20% travel. • Help standardize controls architecture, documentation, and processes as the division scales. Requirements • 10+ years of experience in industrial automation and controls engineering. • Strong proficiency with Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View). • Understanding of electrical design fundamentals — able to review one-lines, wiring diagrams, and schematics. • Experience leading projects or mentoring junior engineers. • Excellent communication and client interaction skills. • U.S. work authorization (eligibility for defense-related projects preferred). Preferred • Siemens TIA Portal / WinCC experience. • Exposure to hydraulic or mechanical systems integration. • Familiarity with marine, defense, or heavy equipment environments. • Experience working within EPC or systems integrator frameworks.
