Full Description

Democracy Maine and the League of Women Voters of Maine are a leading voice in Maine politics. We are the most influential nonpartisan, grassroots organization in Maine fighting for pro-democracy reforms, both through legislation in Augusta and by empowering individuals to enact local change in their own communities. Maine is a shining beacon of citizen-driven democracy reform, and you could help lead our next chapter. We are a small non-profit with a big impact. Democracy Maine is seeking a Civic Engagement Manager. This role provides critical nonpartisan voter information so that Mainers can make informed decisions on election day. We are seeking candidates who are excellent communicators and are ready to build relationships with town clerks. This role also manages projects that encourage Mainers to participate in local government. This individual should be an expert at developing and managing key projects and programs, while also creating space for valued volunteers and local leaders. About Democracy Maine: Democracy Maine works to make government more equitable, inclusive, and accessible by improving elections, protecting and engaging voters, increasing civic engagement, and reducing the influence of private money in politics. Democracy Maine is a collaboration between three nonpartisan organizations — League of Women Voters of Maine, Maine Citizens for Clean Elections, and Maine Students Vote — that partner on advocacy and education efforts. Core responsibilities • Manage keystone projects and programming that inform the public on voting and elections in Maine, while ensuring that Mainers have access to accurate, nonpartisan information. • Manage and deploy voter education publications that may include printed voter guides and other voter education materials. • Support Neighbor-to-Neighbor and Get Out the Vote projects, ensuring accurate records of voter outreach and registration activities. • Support volunteer project teams for civic education and engagement, including: meeting management, goal-setting, volunteer orientation, problem-solving, and filling skills gaps. • Build relationships with town and city clerks across the state and identify strong voices to build trust in elections. • Connect clerks with resources and training to expand their ability to communicate with voters and the media. • Assess new project ideas and opportunities, make recommendations on the viability and impact of projects to the Executive Director and the Program Committee. • Coordinate existing programs designed to encourage participation in our elections and local government. • Provide support to the Organizing and Membership Director and local Leagues and assist with local League events. • Assist with youth civic engagement and provide support to the Youth Programs Manager when appropriate. • Assist with grant research and reporting on civic engagement work. • Manage project data to ensure accurate tracking and outreach. Required Skills: • At least 2-3 years of working in nonprofits or relevant experience. • Demonstrated project management and planning skills: stays on top of multiple projects without dropping any balls, plans backwards and anticipates obstacles, identifies and involves stakeholders appropriately, and uses resources wisely. • Experience leading volunteer teams and delineation of volunteer tasks. • Excellent communication. • Detail-oriented. • Demonstrates an ability to connect with individuals with a broad range of skills, experience, and confidence in leadership abilities. • Committed to DEI policies and works well with diverse or marginalized populations. • Comfort working in a networked, team-based, non-hierarchical environment. • Meeting management skills, as well as facilitation and presentation skills. • Experience working remotely while consistently meeting goals. • Previous civic engagement experience, or working on elections, is a plus but not required. • This role will need to develop an understanding of Maine’s election and voting laws so that this individual can provide factual information to Maine voters. About our Work Culture: Democracy Maine is a highly collaborative organization that prioritizes its partners, coalitions, constituents, and members/volunteers. We are a true grassroots organization; we are committed to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies, social and racial justice, and uplifting marginalized voices. Our work is fast-paced, but we encourage employees to establish a strong work/life balance. That’s why we offer a flexible, four-day work week. We have an office location in Portland, but staff work remotely. We offer in-person opportunities for staff to connect and build relationships with each other. There will be some travel throughout Maine during election cycles. Applicants are expected to maintain a reliable car and a valid driver’s license. Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time position with a salary beginning at $55,000, depending on experience. Health, vision, dental, short-term disability, retirement, and earned time benefits are offered to all employees. How to Apply: Please send a resume and contact information for three references to hr@democracymaine.org using the subject line “Civic Engagement Manager.” We encourage you to submit any additional materials, such as a portfolio, which may highlight your qualifications, experience, and expertise. We will begin reviewing applications after January 16, 2026. No cover letter required. Instead, we ask that you submit answers to the following three questions. Your answers should demonstrate your values, interests, and commitment to our mission. We kindly ask that you do not use AI when writing your answers. Please keep each response to 300 words or less. Question 1: What do you see as the key components of a strong and healthy democracy? What does that look like for Maine, specifically? Question 2: There are many approaches to bringing about societal change. What do you believe works best? How will you bring that to bear in this position? Question 3: Grassroots organizations are composed of empowered individuals who will frequently disagree. How do you navigate that conflict as a leader? Democracy Maine is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applicants of all backgrounds. We do not discriminate in employment against persons based on color, race, religion, age, ability, gender, familial status, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran or marital status. We are committed to the principle of equal employment opportunity for all employees and to providing employees with a work environment free of discrimination and harassment.
