🌱 Volunteer React Native Engineer – Nature Counter Building Technology to Heal People & Planet | CrowdDoing.world ✨ Inspiration Note You are the architect of digital pathways back to the living world. You’ll help build Nature Counter, a revolutionary public health app that empowers individuals and communities to thrive by tracking and increasing time spent in nature. With each commit, you’re helping to shape a world where wellbeing, resilience, and biophilia are mainstream. 🌍 The Mission: Why This Role Matters Imagine a future where a simple app guides people away from chronic stress and screen addiction and into urban parks, forests, beaches, and community green spaces. Nature Counter is designed to be a “step counter for time in nature.” Scientific literature shows that at least 120 minutes per week immersed in nature can significantly reduce stress, depression, and blood pressure—and boost cognitive functioning, creativity, and sleep. With your help, this tool becomes a GPS-integrated wellness tracker, social motivator, and citizen science platform—guiding individuals and institutions to make nature immersion part of public health and urban design strategies. 🧩 What You'll Do (Co-Creatively) • Develop React Native components to support cross-platform (iOS & Android) onboarding, geolocation tracking, streaks, nature-time goals, and social encouragement features. • Implement integrations with device-level features like GPS, notifications, and basic health APIs to help users visualize their “nature dose.” • Work with UX, functional medicine, public health, and nature immersion researchers to translate evidence-based wellbeing strategies into intuitive design and interactions. • Solve real-world edge cases: offline access, urban vs. rural park detection, accessibility for mobility constraints, etc. • Participate in and support a collaborative, learning-driven engineering culture—code reviews, documentation, architectural clarity, and respectful dialogue. 🧠 What You'll Learn & Master This role is designed as service learning and Ikigai-aligned mastery development: • React Native mastery for socially impactful apps • Systems thinking: see how your work interconnects with functional medicine, environmental science, behavior change psychology, and urban planning • Agile remote collaboration: gain real-world experience in interdisciplinary global teams • Biophilic design & regenerative technology: use your skills to regenerate health and wellbeing at scale 🛠️ Skills You Bring Required: • Experience with React Native (Expo or Bare), React Hooks, and mobile debugging on Android/iOS • Strong grasp of JavaScript or TypeScript, and clean component architecture • Familiarity with Git, collaborative coding, and agile processes • Comfort integrating REST or GraphQL APIs Bonus Superpowers (Nice-to-Haves): • Maps and geolocation integration • Experience with notifications or background tasks • Curiosity or experience with: • Public health or behavioral science • Nature-based therapies or environmental psychology • Digital wellbeing, quantified self, or regenerative design ⏰ Time Commitment • Flexible: 4–21 hours/week based on your availability • Initial commitment: 6–12 months, with the opportunity to stay longer as we scale from pilots to widespread adoption 🌐 Collaboration Details • Global virtual team • Volunteer role (unpaid), deeply rooted in service-learning and social innovation impact • Built with interdependence: you’ll collaborate with stakeholders from tech, healthcare, science, and social design 🌿 Why This Role Might Be Your Ikigai • You love solving real-world problems through clean, meaningful code • You care deeply about reversing the isolation, burnout, and mental health crisis by reconnecting people with nature • You're ready to grow as a developer while helping a social innovation scale for global good • You want to do something that matters now—not “someday” 📚 About the Broader Initiative Nature Counter is part of CrowdDoing.world’s biophilia-based public health ecosystem, seeking to make restorative time in nature as trackable and essential as steps, sleep, and nutrition.
