Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary This position provides technical and analytical support in the administration or operation of computer(s) or groups of computers, troubleshooting and improving operation systems, and monitoring the usage and workload of the computer systems and auxiliary equipment. Operational procedures of computer applications are analyzed to determine potential for automation to improve efficiency or correct recurring errors. Problems with operational functions and application performance are analyzed to determine when situations require changes or enhancements to be designed, tested, and implemented. Updates to operational software or new utilities to optimize system performance are installed requiring analysis of impact to existing computer systems and languages and other applications. Overall system functions are reviewed for performance failures, slowdowns, and space shortages and corrective actions are determined. This position may involve tuning of existing functions within the computer operational systems or determining new products or changes from vendors to alleviate situations. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Develops, implements, installs, monitors and evaluates existing and/or new operating systems ensuring that system applications meet the needs of users and staff. Reviews, tests, evaluates and modifies vendor-supplied operating systems and software for compliance to departmental needs and requirements; updates and troubleshoots operating systems and software as needed. Designs, installs, configures and/or maintains network servers and related software. Installs, tests, diagnoses and maintains operating system application system utility programs and procedures/scripts, as required. Troubleshoots and refines networking system software as it affects operating system performance. Maintains daily log of problems and reasons for operation malfunctions. Shares responsibility for meeting computer output deadlines as well as the care, regular maintenance and cleaning of peripheral. Equipment Executes file system and database backup for all computer servers; manages the in-house backup/business continuity solution and offsite storage service. Reads and correctly interprets console messages taking appropriate responsive action; becomes involved in problem determination and resolution in the event of system hardware and software failure in cooperation with the technical support staff. Provides technical consultation to technology staff. Designs, tests, writes and documents more complex scripts, procedures and programs to increase system performance and effectiveness. Assists in the planning, purchase, installation and/or implementation of new or existing systems. Performs problem-source identification and resolution. Assists in training operating staff and users in the proper use of systems. Writes procedures and programs to minimize programming effort and automated operations. Writes system and program specifications and other necessary support documents. Provides information to users, staff and other information technology personnel regarding the technical and procedural aspects of information technology systems and programs. Assists with operating system and application administration tasks as needed. Coordinates scheduling of process and work flow as assigned by management. Performs other duties as assigned.
