Job Summary We are a real estate development and property management company seeking a General Counsel who will be responsible for overseeing all legal, regulatory, and compliance matters affecting the company as well as managing the company’s in-house legal department. As General Counsel you will collaborate with and report directly to the company’s principals. Responsibilities include: • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial leases and related leasing documents, including LOIs, lease modifications, legal notices, and other ancillary agreements, and provide ongoing support to the commercial leasing department. • Oversee and manage all legal aspects of real estate acquisitions (including due diligence) and dispositions, as well as mortgage financings and refinancings. • Oversee and monitor the management of general liability and worker compensation claims by our insurance carrier’s legal counsel. • Support Human Resources (HR) Department in handling employee disciplinary actions, unemployment claims, terminations, union-related issues and other related matters. • Manage and supervise outside counsel to assist with matters such as tax certiorari proceedings, L&T litigations, commercial litigations, trusts and estate transactions, etc. • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of laws and regulations affecting landlords and owners of fair market and rent regulated apartments, communicate best practices to leasing, operations, HR and marketing departments and make policy recommendations to strengthen company legal compliance. • Support leasing and operations teams in managing prospective-tenant and current-tenant disputes. • Draft and review agreements supporting leasing, marketing and compliance teams, including, without limitation, vendor contracts, construction contracts and SaaS contracts. • Draft and review litigation documents, including pleadings, substantive motions, discovery demands and responses. • Manage administrative proceedings, including with the Office of Administrative Trial and Hearings and the Environmental Control Board. • Oversee and manage company’s compliance with rent stabilization laws and human rights regulations. • Oversee cooperative dialogue matters and maintain familiarity with housing voucher programs, including Section 8 and CityFHEPS. • Oversee collections effort. • Manage all phases of residential L&T and commercial litigation from initial filing to conclusion. Qualifications • Admission to New York State Bar REQUIRED. • Background in handling complex litigation matters related to both residential and commercial landlord-tenant issues within New York City Civil Court and the New York State Supreme Court. • Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to resolve disputes. • Ability to commute and/or relocate to Company HQ in Westchester.
