Our Protection & Controls (P&C) division ensures the reliability and safety of power systems through comprehensive substation field services that include protection and control system testing and commissioning of relays, SCADA and automation systems. We are seeking a field service manager with substation and control experience who is interested in taking the next step in his/her career to work as a Regional/Area Substation and Control Manager. In this role you will be a leader of leaders. You will be responsible for leading and overseeing the operational execution of the company’s Protection & Controls field services. This role ensures the efficient deployment of personnel and resources, maintaining high safety, quality, and performance standards in substation-related projects. This position reports directly to the Director of P&C, and plays a critical role in executing operational strategies, driving efficiency, relay tech retention and supporting the growth of the national P&C services business. A 100% US based remote position, this role requires strong leadership skills to effectively manage substation field teams, workforce scheduling, and customer expectations across multiple geographic regions. You will expected to travel 30-50% for substation visits, customer engagements, and leadership meetings. Ideally, we want someone in TX (highly preferred), NM or LA. The ideal candidate will have experience as a substation protection and controls field service manager managing relay technicians. Must have strong leadership and technical skills OR you will have worked as an area or regional manager managing substation and control projects. Responsibilities: Operational Leadership • Directly manage 5-10 people, ensuring efficient execution of field operations. • Drive workforce planning, scheduling, and optimization to ensure maximum productivity. • Enforce operational excellence through process standardization, safety compliance, and performance monitoring. • Serve as the primary operational liaison between field teams, customers, and leadership. • Ensure proper implementation of substation commissioning, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures. Field & Project Execution Support • Provide technical oversight and guidance to field personnel on substation protection, control systems, and high-voltage equipment. • Support project execution from planning through completion, ensuring adherence to technical and regulatory standards. • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency. • Work closely with engineering, safety, and training teams to ensure compliance with the specific utility standards and electric industry regulations. Customer & Business Collaboration • Maintain strong relationships with customers, ensuring alignment of service execution with client expectations. • Collaborate with business development teams to support growth strategies, proposal development, and new project scoping. • Represent in leadership meetings, strategic planning discussions, and operational reviews. Financial & Performance Oversight • Manage operational budgets and optimize resource allocation to meet financial targets. • Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as technician utilization, project profitability, and safety metrics. • Oversee cost control measures, ensuring proper tracking of labor, materials, and job expenses. Required Experience: • The ideal candidate will have experience as a substation protection and controls field service manager, managing relay technicians. Must have strong leadership and technical skills OR you will have worked as an area or regional manager managing substation and control projects • 5+ years of direct, hands-on substation field experience, including: • Installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, or construction of substations secondary equipment. • Extensive work on substation transformers, breakers, switchgear, and control schemes. • Demonstrated career progression from field technician, engineer, or commissioning engineer to leadership or management. • 2+ years of leadership experience in a substation field services organization. • Experience managing remote field teams, workforce planning, and substation project execution. • Direct oversight of crew scheduling, logistics, and safety compliance. • Ability to travel 30-50% to substation sites, customer meetings, and leadership engagements. • Proven leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with experience managing multi-site field teams. Desired (not required): • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience). • Experience with substation construction, protective relay testing and commissioning, and major maintenance projects. • Knowledge of project management tools, scheduling software, and digital reporting systems. • Experience working with utility, industrial, or renewable energy substation projects. • Experience owning a P&L from budget creation through operational delivery, including involvement in forecasting and the month-end close process. Working Conditions: • Remote role with regular virtual collaboration. • Frequent travel (30-50%) to substations, customer locations, and leadership meetings.
