Fullstack Software Engineering Instructor Location: Remote (U.S.-based, Chicago-area preferred; must work primarily on Central Time) Employment Type: Hourly (Approximately 30 Hours Per Week) Reports to: Program Director Salary: $40 per hour About Code Platoon Code Platoon is a nonprofit coding bootcamp that prepares Veterans, active-duty Servicemembers, military spouses, and adult military children for careers in software development and cloud engineering. Since 2016, we’ve helped hundreds of graduates launch meaningful careers in tech. The Role Code Platoon is seeking a Fullstack Software Engineering Instructor to lead our Immersive program and support students as they move from beginners to job-ready developers. You’ll bring real-world engineering experience into the classroom, helping students build strong technical foundations, professional habits, and confidence in their ability to succeed in tech. You’ll guide hands-on, production-focused learning in a collaborative environment, modeling best practices in software design, problem-solving, and teamwork. The classroom experience is intentionally built for Veterans, Servicemembers, and military spouses transitioning into software engineering careers. Students gain practical experience building, deploying, and maintaining applications using React, Django, PostgreSQL, Docker, and AWS, preparing them for junior engineering roles. What You’ll Do • Lead hands-on learning through live lectures, labs, and code-along sessions that help students build practical fullstack engineering skills. • Guide students through real-world projects, coaching individuals and teams as they plan, build, and ship software. • Review code and give clear, timely feedback that strengthens technical skills, problem-solving, and engineering judgment. • Support students through challenges, helping them debug issues, make sound architecture decisions, and apply industry best practices. • Collaborate on curriculum improvement, working with instructors and staff to keep content relevant, modern, and effective. • Model professional engineering habits, including strong communication, teamwork, and accountability, while fostering an inclusive, respectful learning environment for Veterans, Servicemembers, and military spouses. What you'll bring Required skills and experience • Strong competency across the Fullstack software development lifecycle, from design through deployment. • Ability to lead clear, engaging technical instruction, including live lectures lasting two to four hours. • Experience reviewing code and delivering constructive, actionable feedback. • Experience mentoring, teaching, or supporting developers or students at varying skill levels. • Ability to track student technical progress and adjust support as needed. • Comfort explaining complex concepts to beginners without oversimplifying. • Strong written communication skills for documentation, assignments, and curriculum content. • A collaborative, mission-focused mindset and commitment to supporting Veterans, Servicemembers, and military spouses as they transition into tech. Preferred qualifications • Prior teaching, mentoring, or coding bootcamp instructional experience. • Industry experience building and shipping production applications. • Familiarity with cloud security, scalability, and production reliability concepts. • A demonstrated passion for education and helping new developers launch technical careers. • A strong connection to the military community, including Veterans, military spouses, or adult dependents. Technical experience Core technologies • Python • JavaScript (ES6+) • Git and GitHub • Django, including REST APIs, authentication, and ORM usage • React.js, including hooks, state management, and component architecture • PostgreSQL, including schema design, queries, and migrations • Docker for containerization and local development workflows • AWS, including EC2 and Route 53 (familiarity with S3 and IAM is a plus) • Nginx and Gunicorn for deployment and production configuration Development practices • Fullstack application architecture • RESTful API design • Single Page Application design • Authentication and authorization patterns • Debugging and performance optimization • Deployment and CI/CD fundamentals Compensation & Benefits • Salary: $40-$45 per hour, commensurate with experience • Medical, dental, and vision insurance • 403(b) with employer match • This position is open to candidates based in the United States who are authorized to work in the U.S. at the time of hire.
