Cluster (a16z Speedrun 006) is building the next generation of ecommerce growth systems: AI agents that don’t just chat — they ship changes, learn from outcomes, and drive measurable revenue for Shopify brands. We’re looking for a high-agency AI Engineer Intern to help us take the newest AI tech and get it into production fast. This is a hands-on 0→1 role for someone early in their career with strong capability and curiosity. You don’t need years of experience — just evidence that you're excited about building. You’ll prototype agents quickly, test them against real workflows, and ship the ones that create tangible value (for customers and for our own team) to production. What you’ll do • Build AI agents that ecommerce brands use to run their business more effectively. • Build internal agents that help Cluster move faster (sales, marketing, ops). • Prototype ideas quickly, validate them with data/users, then ship to production when value is proven. • Work across the stack as needed: data/analytics, backend, frontend, and LLM integrations. Essential Skills • Experience using LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) • You use AI coding tools daily • Evidence you’ve shipped something real (internship, personal project, hackathon, anything counts). • You're a self-starter that's comfortable working autonomously and moving fast. Minimum Requirements • CS background or projects that clearly demonstrate software engineering ability. Hours & Location • We are currently going through a16z speedrun so preference for someone based in SF (NYC is also good since we will be based there starting May) • Planning to start part-time with ~25-30h / week but have some flexibility & potential to upgrade to full time for the summer. Process • Small number of interviews followed by a paid work trial.
