The department is supported by a dedicated team of 6.75 full-time employees working alongside an expansive team of over 100 instructors, recreation specialists, facility attendants, and other vital team members. This community-focused workforce operates across four primary divisions: Recreation, Parks and Trails, Special Events, and Administration. These divisions oversee approximately 1,200 annual recreation programs, manage 26 parks encompassing 170 acres of parkland, and over 5.5 miles of trails. They also coordinate over 10,000 volunteer hours each year as well as manage the permitting to support 40 annual special events within City limits. The department’s initiatives have been recognized and received awards from the National Recreation and Parks Association, Washington Recreation & Parks Association, and multiple other affiliated organizations. General Scope of Work: The Facility Attendant is responsible for working at the front desk of the Recreation Center, helping individuals register for programs, answering phone calls, ensuring safety policies and procedures are adhered to, providing information about the facility’s offerings, and securing the building. They must effectively communicate with customers, instructors, and staff, distribute updated information over the phone and in person, and be both team players within the department and capable of working independently. This position requires the ability to maintain a safe, inclusive environment, and handle multiple tasks in a busy facility. Typical days/hours would be: Tuesday: 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM Wednesday: 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM Thursday: 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM Friday: 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM This is considered a part-time Casual Laborer position. On-call positions may also be available. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Job Duties: This job description reflects general details as necessary to describe the principal functions of this job, the level of knowledge and skill typically required, and the scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned. • Open and close the facility as appropriate and secure the building at all times. • Provide excellent customer service, answer incoming telephone calls, answer questions, direct calls to the appropriate staff person, and take messages. • Register participants for programs and accept payments. • Check rental availability of amenities, sending the appropriate application via email. • Count money received, balance the daily receipts, and run financial reports as needed. • Communicate clearly and consistently with other department staff to distribute the most current and up-to-date information possible. • Retrieve telephone and e-mail messages and return calls and e-mails as quickly as possible. Make courtesy calls to customers as needed. • Answer questions from the public, even if it is not related to the Parks and Recreation Department or direct them to someone who can answer them. • Use office machines as required such as computers, printer/copier/scanner, and adding machines. • Complete routine filing for the Parks and Recreation Department. • Perform other basic maintenance tasks as necessary, such as replacing supplies in the restrooms and public areas. • Assist with special projects when directed to do so by the Office Manager. • Drive to and from other City and community buildings and events. • All employees may be required to perform emergency response duties in the event of a local emergency or disaster and are required to participate as part of the City's emergency operations. • All employees share responsibility for maintaining a workplace culture that promotes respect, dignity, and professionalism toward colleagues, community members, and the residents we serve. • Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Exceptional customer service skills, such as, outgoing personality, friendly, and a sense of humor are necessary. • Skill in interacting with the public in a positive, tactful manner in possibly stressful, emotionally charged situations. • Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization, as well as the ability to work independently. • Strong grammar and composition skills. • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of department operations and procedures, and federal, state, and local pertinent regulations. • Familiarity with the Poulsbo/North Kitsap community, and the services within the community. • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable with learning new computer software. • Ability to multitask in a busy environment. Physical Demands and Work Environment: • Work is performed in a busy office atmosphere at the Recreation Center. The front desk is located near the front door and classrooms, which can be loud and distracting at times. • This position does not require regular heavy lifting; however, the individual may be required to lift tables, chairs, and occasional heavy boxes of approximately 30-50 pounds. • This position requires availability during evenings and potentially weekends. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications: • Possess a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. • Must be aged 18 or older. • Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment, the ability to obtain a Washington State driver’s license within three (3) months of appointment, and a driving record free of significant moving violations. Preferred Qualifications: • At least one (1) year of administrative experience working in a busy environment. Licenses and Other Requirements: • Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record to meet City insurance requirements for operating City vehicles. • A background check is required and will be conducted only after a conditional offer of employment has been made. Previous criminal history is not an automatic disqualifier; all findings will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with applicable laws and City policy.
