Under the general direction of the Assistant Parks, Recreation and Aquatics Director, the Assistant Camp Director supports the mission of Camp Fife by assisting in all aspects of camp operations, including planning, program delivery, staff support, and day-to-day logistics. This position serves as a key communication lead for the camp, acting as a primary point of contact between families and camp staff through the camp communication software, including managing and uploading forms, rosters, schedules, and incident documentation, and maintaining timely, clear communication with parents regarding missing information, incidents, and disciplinary matters. Working in close partnership with the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director provides operational and programmatic support across the camp, assists with daily programming needs, and offers guidance and coverage for camp counselors as needed, including supporting breaks and serving as a secondary counselor during challenging or high-need situations, helping ensure a safe, organized, and well-communicated experience for campers, staff, and families. A mandatory week-long training must be completed before the camp season begins. This position requires flexibility, as hours are typically 40 hours per week during camp and 16 hours per week during non-camp weeks but may vary depending on program needs. Camp Fife operates: • Spring Camp (April 6-10) 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Summer Camp (June 22 – August 28) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Position duration: March 30 – September 4, 2026 This position reports directly to the Recreation Manager. • Assist the Camp Director with planning, administration, and logistics before, during, and after each camp session. • Lead and supervise activities, ensuring safety, engagement, and alignment with camp goals. • Lead and mentor Camp Counselors, fostering a positive and supportive work environment. • Communicate effectively with participants, parents, staff, and the Camp Director to ensure smooth operations. • Prepare documents, including program evaluation forms, accident reports, daily logs, and schedules. • Ensure compliance with all applicable City, County, and State laws, as well as City ordinances, policies, and procedures. • Drive a 15-passenger shuttle-style van for field trips or transportation, as required. • Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies or behavioral challenges, utilizing problem-solving and conflict-resolution strategies. • Perform minor maintenance and custodial duties as needed. • Open and close camp facilities, ensuring security and readiness. • Perform other duties as assigned to support camp operations. Knowledge of: • Recreation programs and appropriate activities for youth ages 6-12. • Effective ways to lead and engage a team. • Behavior management and motivational strategies for youth. • Conflict-resolution techniques. • General first aid and safety practices. • Legal and defensive driving practices Ability to: • Effectively interact with diverse participants, staff, and parents. • Effectively use camp management and communication software to support parent communication, documentation and daily camp operations. • Lead and motivate a team of counselors and program staff. • Adapt to changing needs and solve problems independently. • Drive a 15-passenger shuttle-style van safely and confidently. • Communicate clearly and professionally in both written and verbal forms. • Maintain a professional appearance and wear the required program uniform. • Respond to emergencies calmly and appropriately. • Communicate with the ability to understand and give verbal and written instructions in the English language Education, Experience, and Other Requirements: • High school graduate or equivalent. • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire • At least one year of experience working in recreation, education, or childcare with youth ages 6-12. • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. • Valid CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or the ability to obtain during training). • Possession and maintenance of a valid Washington State Driver’s License with good driving record. • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language. Working Conditions: • Indoor and outdoor work environments, including varied weather conditions. • Fast-paced, with frequent interruptions and dynamic responsibilities. Physical Abilities: • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds. • Bending, kneeling, and crouching to assist campers and staff. • Physical endurance for hiking, standing, or traveling distances of up to 1+ miles. • Visual ability to monitor staff and campers for safety.
