Perform maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment, including diagnostics, system repairs, welding, tire replacement, and data entry.
Requires automotive repair skills, certifications, a valid driver's license, and experience in vehicle maintenance.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK: This position is responsible for performing a full range of maintenance and repair work on City vehicles and equipment. TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: • Performs diagnoses to determine repair needs for a wide range of vehicles and equipment. • Repairs steering, braking, hydraulic, electrical, lighting, air conditioning, suspension, and related system components of vehicles and equipment. • Fabricates and/or welds hoses and related materials. • Removes, replaces, and balances tires for various vehicles. • Performs data entry, work orders, electronic diagnosis and shop operation information input. • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings. This job description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the business needs of the department. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; or, Associate’s degree and 3 years of related experience; or, all required certification(s) and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Some experience as a Fleet Mechanic II required. LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: • Valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver’s License Class A with Air Brake Endorsement and be qualified on all equipment serviced by the Central Garage or its designated contract repair facility (must obtain within 90 days of hire). • Must be certified in and maintain 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 automotive areas and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 heavy truck areas by the State of Michigan and/or equivalent certification by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) (must obtain within 90 days of hire). • Fork Lift Operator Certification (must obtain within six months of hire) PARTS AND WEIGHTS OF THE EXAMINATION: Oral 100% POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS: • Satisfactory completion of medical examination, driving record check, and criminal background check prior to start date. • All appointees are subject to a one-year probationary period.
