CASA & CASA IN ACTION SYNOPSIS CASA’s mission to create a more just society by building power and improving the quality of life in working-class: Black, Latino/a/e, Afro-descendent, Indigenous, and Immigrant Communities. Our vision is rooted in the collective power of our community, our inclusive, permanent, member-led movement radically transforms communities and systems to ensure the needs, dreams, and aspirations of members are fully met as we strive for justice and full liberation at home and in solidarity with others across the world. CASA has a sister organization, CASA in Action, a separate, but related, nonprofit organization that is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. Although CASA and CASA in Action share a common goal of supporting immigrants and low-income people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, they are separate organizations with their own board of directors. DEPARTMENT SYNOPSIS The communications department currently has an elections manager, two regional specialists which together cover CASA’s four states of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Georgia; and two digital specialists which implement digital outreach and mobilization strategies. The interim director oversees their supervision as well as the supervision of graphic design, videography, translation, and other visual element vendors. The director leads the national campaigns, litigation, and community defense strategies. POSITION SUMMARY CASA and CASA in Action seek a Temporary Communications Director to provide strategic leadership and direction of our communications program while our current director is on leave. This role will involve 30 hours per week of work, lasting approximately three months and reports directly to the Chief of Strategy. The Temporary Communications Director will take the helm of a fast-paced and high-profile communications program, managing all external communication processes of our two organizations. Responsibilities include leading traditional and digital media outreach, implementing strategic campaign communications, overseeing social media and web engagement, and producing high-quality written, visual, and multimedia content. This position sits on the Executive Leadership team and plays a critical role in shaping and executing communications strategy to advance our campaigns in three states and nationally. The ideal candidate will be a decisive leader who can quickly assess priorities, guide a skilled communications team, and keep the organization’s voice at the forefront during this pivotal time. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Lead and supervise communications staff, interns, and consultants, ensuring the team is effective, focused, and responsive. • Drive the traditional media program: serve as organizational spokesperson when needed, respond to inquiries, deepen media relationships, and ensure strong press materials and messaging in English. Plan and execute press events, briefings, and rapid response. • Lead a multi-platform digital and social media program that maximizes engagement and campaign impact across geographies. Set clear metrics, monitor performance, and retool strategies as necessary. • Oversee development of compelling digital and print materials, graphics, and ads. Manage or support active media buys for campaigns. • Advance and adapt strategic communications plans in collaboration with staff, members, and partners to win campaigns, strengthen the organization’s brand, and shift public narratives. • Represent the organization in external spaces, including with coalition partners, media outlets, and funders. Lead or co-lead multi-organizational communications teams on campaigns such as immigration reform, electoral engagement, and others. • Provide executive-level input and strategic advice at the leadership table, ensuring communications is fully integrated into organizational decision-making. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Political Science, International Studies, or a related field required. • Master’s degree in Communications, Public Affairs, or a related discipline preferred but not required. • Equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of a formal degree, particularly in roles involving communications strategy, media relations, or digital campaigns. • Demonstrated experience working in bilingual (English/Spanish) communications contexts strongly preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED • Proven commitment to progressive issues. • At least five years of experience in communications or grassroots organizing with a strong communications component, ideally within immigrant communities. Professional press experience will be considered if paired with demonstrated commitment to progressive issues. • Track record of running effective communications campaigns that shape public opinion, mobilize supporters, or win policy/electoral victories. • Exceptional writing and editing skills in English. • Deep experience with both traditional and digital media platforms, including designing and executing digital strategies. • Creativity and technical fluency to adapt to emerging platforms and tools. • Preferred: professional production experience. • Proficiency in office software (Google Suite and graphic design principles) and ability to manage databases. • Strong leadership and team management skills; able to set direction and hold staff accountable. • Highly organized and able to juggle multiple, high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment. • Flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends. • Reliable transportation to get to key events and functions as required.
