We are looking for a Crime Data Analyst to join the Research & Innovation team at CAP Index, with a strong focus on applied, practitioner-oriented work. This role blends applied crime analysis with modern data science. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in criminology and data analysis and the technical ability to build, manage, and automate API-driven data pipelines that power our crime models and research products. You will work with incident-level datasets (NIBRS, RMS/CAD, open data portals), geospatial layers, and large-scale analytical workflows. This role is hands-on, collaborative, and central to CAP’s data operations. Key Responsibilities API & Data Pipeline Development • Build, manage, and automate data pipelines that pull crime and social data from APIs, open data portals, and cloud sources. • Develop scripts/tools to streamline ingestion and validation of external datasets. • Monitor pipeline performance and maintain data integrity across recurring pulls. • Work with the R&I team to integrate new sources into CAP’s broader data ecosystem. Crime Data Analysis, Management, & Reporting • Process, clean, and analyze large incident-level datasets. • Conduct quality checks, validation routines, and harmonization across multiple agencies. • Manage multi-jurisdictional datasets for internal modeling and research. • Use ArcGIS Pro, or similar tools, to perform cleaning and spatial analyses. • Support timelines, deliverables, and inter-department coordination for data intake and analysis projects. • Communicate progress, blockers, and data-related insights clearly across teams. • Create infographics, briefs, dashboards, and research deliverables that translate findings for technical and non-technical audiences. • Assist in internal and client-facing presentations. Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Data Science, GIS, or related field. • 3–5 years of experience in crime analysis, data analysis, or similar role. • Strong proficiency in: • GIS (ArcGIS Pro preferred) • SQL and/or Python • Data cleaning, transformation, and quality assurance • Ability to build and maintain API-based data ingestion workflows. • Excellent communication skills and a detail-oriented mindset. • Ability to work independently in a remote, fast-paced environment. Preferred (but not required) • Experience with NIBRS/CJIS datasets and validation procedures. • Advanced statistical analysis experience. • Familiarity with ACS or other major social datasets.
