Job Title: Highway Maintenance Worker Employer: Caltrans District 3 (Department of Transportation) Location: Los Angeles County, District 7 Salary: $4,102.00 – $4,865.00 per month Job Code: JC-498589 Position Type: Permanent, Full Time Job Overview Working under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Highway Maintenance Worker works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to the maintenance of the State Highway system. The incumbent operates and maintains various light equipment and performs general labor tasks such as paving, mowing, ditch cleaning, dig outs, brush removal, pavement patching, and repair or replacement of guide markers, signs, fences, guardrails, culverts, and roadside amenities. The position is represented under collective bargaining. Key Responsibilities Operate and maintain light equipment. Perform general labor tasks such as paving, mowing, ditch cleaning, and dig outs. Remove brush and undergrowth from highway right‑of‑way; patch pavements and repair surface conditions. Repair or replace guide markers, signs, fences, guardrails, and clean culverts. Implement traffic control, litter pick up, maintain roadside rests, and remove graffiti. Make minor repairs to signs and roadside markers. Work overtime for storms, emergencies, or special projects as directed by the Supervisor. Working Conditions Work in temperatures up to 120°F, down to 25°F, and other extreme weather conditions. Perform work in high and confined spaces. Regular overtime and occasional overnight travel (per diem). Must use personal protective equipment: work boots, safety vest or long‑sleeved shirts, long pants, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, face shields, gloves, respirator, and harness as required. Minimum Qualifications Valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license. Completion of 12th grade or equivalent. Possession of a qualified applicator certificate for pesticides (optional). Desirable Qualifications Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Qualified applicator certificate (QAC) for pesticides issued by CAL‑EPA.
