Job Description And Duties Under the general direction of the chief deputy director, the Chief Operations Officer (COO) provides executive leadership, policy direction, and oversight of all administrative programs and services within the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), as well as the Office of Self Insurance Plans (OSIP), the Office of the Director’s Research Division (Research), and the Office of Equity and Risk. The COO plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the activities of these functions to ensure efficient and effective operations that support DIR's mission to protect and improve the health, safety, and economic, well-being of workers in California. The COO oversees the Office of Human Resources, Office of Fiscal Services, Office of Information Services, Business Management Office, Training, Policy, and Support Services, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Office, Occupational Injuries and Illness Statistics unit, Prevailing Wage Research Unit, and, via OSIP, the regulation of workers' compensation self-insurance within California. Additionally, the COO provides strategic direction, ensures compliance with state and federal laws and policies, promotes accountability, and fosters collaboration across divisions to support DIR's broad labor, workplace safety, and enforcement programs. The COO also serves as a member of the Department's Executive Leadership team and acts as a key advisor to the Director on all administrative, fiscal, and operational matters. • Pending CalHR approval* You will find additional information about the job in the Duty Statement . Detail your customer service approach and provide specific examples of how this approach has led you to successfully meeting departmental goals and business objectives. • This role is responsible for providing executive-level leadership over complex state administrative and operational programs across the department with internal and external impacts. Describe your experience, including years of experience, leading and coordinating process and policy implementations that required coordination between multiple departmental and other California state government stakeholders. Please provide specific examples, your role in the process, and the outcomes. • Provide two or more examples, including years of experience, that demonstrate leading the development and facilitation of solutions to complex governmental problems that required you to engage with state control agencies such as Department of Finance, CalHR, Department of General Services, California Department of Technology, and the Legislature.
