As an Ability Advisor, you will deliver specialized expertise and guidance in disability management, return-to-work planning, and medical accommodations. You will also manage individual cases for Calgary Police Service (CPS) employees while also supporting broader operational needs connected to disability-related matters. Primary duties include: • Create and manage return-to-work plans for employees with physical or psychological restrictions. • Maintain comprehensive case files including employee data, accommodation history, documentation, and detailed notes. • Coordinate communication with employees and key partners to outline plan objectives, responsibilities, timelines, and expected outcomes. • Resolve medical discrepancies and obtain treatment recommendations from the Corporate Health Consultant. • Coordinate directly with medical providers to deliver full medical management when no insurer is involved. • Deliver orientation and ongoing training to recruits on modified duties, injury management, and disability claim processes. • Monitor and adjust return-to-work plans to ensure alignment with employees, supervisors, insurers, and union representatives. • Initiate referrals to Vocational Rehabilitation when suitable alternate duties are not available. • Work with supervisors and key partners to address performance issues linked to employee health concerns. • Advocate for employees with medical restrictions, coordinating return-to-work meetings with supervisors and HR when performance concerns arise. • Review medical restrictions regularly to confirm validity and ensure ongoing suitability of accommodations. • Interpret legislation and City policies that influence the return-to-work process. Qualifications • A 1-year certificate such as Disability Management Practitioner Certificate Program, National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR), Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) or Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC) and a minimum of 3 years experience in in disability management in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity are preferred including some experience in a multi-union work environment; OR • A degree in Psychology, Kinesiology or Physical Education and a minimum of 3 years experience in disability management in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity are preferred including some experience in a multi union work environment. • Additional course work in occupational health, rehabilitation, legislation related to disability management, human resource management, disability insurance, psychological, and workplace factors in disability is considered an asset. • Previous case management experience is preferred. • Knowledge of occupational demands in policing or law enforcement is an asset. • Success in this position requires emotional intelligence; creating and sustaining safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces; promoting supportive, balanced and professional accountability; building and maintaining relationships; developing self and others; striving for results.
