Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern - Summer 2026 Job Category: Intern/Co-op Time Type: Part time Minimum Clearance Required to Start: None Employee Type: Part-Time On-Call Percentage of Travel Required: Up to 10% Type of Travel: Continental US • * * CACI is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our Spectrum Superiority division, supporting our photonics team-- we are expanding! The internship will begin in May, last 12 weeks and you must be available to work 100% on-site. Our laser communications technology is helping NASA provide high-definition video from the International Space Station, and to explore asteroids 250 million miles away. Our other optical technology can also help scientists discover biohazards; support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and protect soldiers from explosive devices. The Opportunity: You will assist with the packaging and integration of optical systems based around telescopes, gimbals, custom and COTS PCBs, passive, active, and free space components, and their supporting hardware. These systems are frequently integrated onto a variety of host platforms including satellites and aircraft, which requires design, analysis, simulation, and field measurements to ensure peak performance. Responsibilities: • Design the packaging for complex subsystems with optical, photonic, optoelectronic, electrical, and mechanical elements for R&D and production programs for U.S. government customers • Produce build-to drawings and data packages • Support the effort to transition the design into limited volume production (both on-site and at other locations), including development of assembly processes and writing of build procedures • Utilize rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser/waterjet cutting) to produce both quick-turn models for demonstration and functional fixturing/tooling Qualifications: Required: • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future • Must be able to obtain and maintain applicable security clearance • Familiarity with and interest in 3D modeling, CAD, and rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printers • Strong written and verbal communications skills • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, ability to work independently • Strong interpersonal, problem solving, and organizational skills • Perform other duties as required Desired: • Experience using SolidWorks design environment and PDM • Experience with electronics packaging • Experience with thermal and stress/strain modeling • Familiarity with optical physics fundamentals • Experience with Aerospace Engineering What You Can Expect: A culture of integrity. Pay Range: There are a host of factors that can influence final salary including, but not limited to, geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, relevant prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education, and certifications.
