Full Description

The Sales Development Manager (SDM) is responsible for managing and expanding business relationships with clients and customers to drive assortment, merchandising, pricing, and promotional execution that increases market share, volume, and profitability. A central focus of this role is actively calling on customers across New York City and the New Jersey area—including specialty distributors, sub-jobbers, and retail partners—to strengthen client visibility, maximize sales performance, and expand market penetration. The SDM provides strategic recommendations, ensures tactical execution of client objectives, and supports customer category growth goals. Responsibilities · Proactively call on and develop relationships with customers in the New York City Metro area and surroundings, including specialty distributors, sub-jobbers, and retail accounts, to drive sales, volume growth, and profitability. · Demonstrate knowledge of client products, policies, and personnel; collaborate with clients to establish realistic objectives and sales strategies tailored to the NYC market. · Develop and maintain in-market expertise by monitoring local customer trends, distributor and sub-jobber dynamics, competitive activity, consumer behaviors, and promotional best practices. · Provide fiduciary management of client/customer relationships in areas such as innovation, assortment, pricing, shelving, promotional programming, and claims management. · Maintain accurate sales activity records, manage client and customer portals, and leverage company platforms (e.g., SharePoint, CRM tools) to track progress and share insights. · Establish frequent and professional communication with NYC-based customers, clients, and internal leadership, escalating opportunities and issues in a timely manner. · Participate in training and development to improve communication, organization, analytical, negotiation, and presentation skills. · Represent the company with professionalism, integrity, and accountability while fostering strong partnerships that support long-term customer growth. · Contribute to team collaboration by supporting peers, sharing best practices, and aligning with company strategic goals. Qualifications Education and/or Experience: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred; or four to ten years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in sales with specialty distributors and sub-jobbers in New York City is highly desirable. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret sales operations and procedures, business periodicals, and client communications. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and associates. Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform accurate calculations of budgets, sales margins, promotional percentages, discounts, and commissions. Capable of applying concepts such as sales forecasting, velocity ratios, and supply chain calculations. Reasoning Ability: Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret technical instructions and apply problem-solving to abstract and concrete variables. Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Knowledge of order processing and CRM systems. Other Skills and Abilities: Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean DMV report. Ability to travel within the New York City metro area on a regular basis.
